SSS Picture Prompt Day 3

The Test That Changed Everything

A tough lesson learned

Word Picture Prompt for the day is “ cheating”.

We were in sixth grade. It feels like a long time ago.

In our biology class, one time, our teacher told us to take out a blank sheet of paper and write a surprise test about biomes.

Helen was my best friend, and she was sitting close to Johan. She suddenly got worried, and it looked like she was going to faint. She had some problems at home and didn’t get to study for that class.

We started writing our tests, focused, and tried to remember whatever we could. Meanwhile, Helen’s face had turned blueish, and she looked like a ghost and sick to the stomach.

After about 15 minutes, the teacher stepped out of the classroom for an urgent call.

Helen took advantage of that and did something totally unexpected.

She peeked at Johan’s paper and started copying his answers. She did it quickly and with her eyes darting from paper to paper. After the teacher came back, she handed in her paper before anyone else and asked permission to get out of the classroom.

She went out with lightning speed, and I thought she was going to fall in the hallway or bump into someone. She later told me that she had to throw up for a solid 10 minutes.

When we talked about it after school, Helen admitted she felt guilty for cheating. She hadn’t planned it, but she was scared and stressed about the test. She didn’t allow herself to think. She had suddenly transformed into another person who was not the same calm and shy girl Helen was.

Helen’s takeaway: Cheating might help in a specific moment, but it made her feel horrible inside. It made her sick to the stomach, due to her conscience.

After that incident, Helen promised “cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die” to never cheat again. She really never cheated again and became a famous biology researcher, despite her shaky family situation, divorced parents, and sick sibling.
