A Wise man once said, “lies are a little fortress”. Inside our fortresses, we feel safe because here, we reign supreme. Except, nobody likes liars. They’re deemed despicable and untrustworthy.

So if lying is that repulsive, why do people still lie?

Many reasons: the fortress is so comfortable and safe and we don’t have to face the cold, hard truth. Therein we can avoid responsibility, earn the admiration of the gullible, and just keep doing what we’re doing.

However, lying takes a toll on us physically and emotionally. Research shows apart from ruining reputations, lying can also increase the risks of:

  • cancer,
  • depression,
  • addiction,
  • low relationship satisfaction, and eventually
  • shattered self-esteem.

Taking all that into consideration, truth seems a more appealing, healthier long-term strategy. Sure, lies may work in the short-term but when the fortress is eventually breached there might be too many damaging consequences to deal with.
