The Surprising Benefit of Writing on Medium

I only started writing on Medium a few weeks ago and I’m being pleasantly surprised by some of the extra benefits this platform has to offer.

My decision to write here was motivated by these three reasons:

  • I wanted to start a blog without needing hosting services.
  • I needed an audience and Medium already had one.
  • I wanted to get paid for my writing.

Those are all great reasons to join Medium, but there was one benefit I hadn’t thought about before — community.

Writing is a pretty solitary craft, especially when you’re just starting out. Most of the time, it’s just you and the blank page in front of you. As writers, we rarely work in a team. It can get pretty lonely.

I don’t usually mind it because I’m a devoted introvert like most other writers I’ve met. But it’s nice not to feel alone on this journey. I’ve only been on the platform a few weeks, but it already feels different than any other writing I’ve done. It feels like I’m a part of something bigger than myself.

Although I’ve mostly just connected with the writers on this platform through reading and engaging with each other’s work, this community feels like a second home — a digital one.

When I write on Medium, I don’t feel alone.

I’ve been enjoying my time here — not only writing but also reading up on all kinds of topics that interest me.

It brings me great joy when I see that someone from the other side of the world wants to connect with me. And I love the fact that the great ideas of different writers from all around the world can reach me on one platform. What a gift!

When I decided to join Medium I was only thinking about what kind of value I will deliver through my writing. I even wondered for a moment if it was worth paying for the membership — I didn’t think I’d benefit much from it. But since I’ve joined, I’ve realized the value that I could receive from other creators.

I’m learning a great deal from other writers simply by discovering and reading their work. I’ve become a better writer because of it.

It’s also how I connected with top writers and coaches who inspired me to become an entrepreneur.

I have no regrets about joining Medium because it’s given me more than I was expecting:

  • Community.
  • Support.
  • Guidance.

I highly recommend it to any new writer who wants to start from zero without actually feeling like starting from zero. But regardless of whether you’re new or experienced, Medium is a great platform to join.
