The Surprising Benefit Of Using Tarot In Ancestral Healing
Listening to your ancestors by divination gives them a voice
Recently I attended a virtual summit about ancestral healing. The presenters are all involved and healing trauma, genealogy, ancestral healing, even in exploring past lives. The goal of the summit was to present ideas and practices to promote healing trauma, especially from ancestral lines. The basic premise is what is in one is in the whole. If we begin healing trauma on a personal level we can contribute to global healing. Baby steps.
Many wise and experienced people presented techniques and rituals for achieving this goal.
My lifelong experience with tarot and divination made me particularly curious when those topics were presented during the summit. One of the presenters commented that she was interested in this type of healing more than ever because see she was approaching the stage where she will become an ancestor.
That made me laugh because the same thought crossed my mind. I guess you would say I’m in the elder stage of my life, which I greatly appreciate. Other members of my family have focused on genealogy over the years. Lately, I have also been told to reach back in time and work with my personal ancestors. I’ve also been working with ancestors from other families. It is very intense and powerful work. Sometimes it’s even funny.
Because Tarot is so familiar to me and I’m so comfortable with it it seemed a natural choice in reaching out to my relatives. The cards have always been a way for me to channel my intuition and in turn to pick up messages. I’ve always called the messengers' spirit guides. I’m sure some are my relatives because they’ve identified themselves. I’m sure some are angels and other spirit guides that stay with us through this life and probably many lives. That’s my personal take on how this information is transmitted, and it is very personal. It’s been my experience people receive this information in many different ways.
When we were children many of us were conditioned to ignore the things that we heard or saw. It’s just your imagination. Yes and no. When you are discouraged from using your intuition you begin to doubt yourself or to dismiss information that is trying to be relayed to you. It’s a kind of use it or lose it thing. Many people I know are open to receiving this information. It can be called intuition, a download, listening to my spirit guides. Even things you see or hear while meditating are often messages.
Tarot cards are a divination tool that has been around for a few centuries. A traditional deck consists of a major arcana, four suits of court cards, and a minor arcana, totaling 78 cards. Today there is a myriad of tarot decks, many are untraditional, and most can be used for communicating with your ancestors. I also use Oracle cards, which vary greatly in the theme and images. My recommendation would be to look at a few decks and feel which ones resonate with you. It’s all about energy. I’m a firm believer in keeping things simple especially when starting something that’s new to you.
I thought I would do a simple three-card reading as an example. That is my go-to reading whenever I am looking for guidance or information. The question I asked was, “What is the significance of ancestral healing today?”

The card sitting above the reading is called a Significator. It represents the Querent, me. She is the Queen of Wands, a mature (ahem) woman with a fire sign (astrology). The first card is the card in the center. It is called The Tower. It signifies a drastic sudden change. As you can see from the picture, lightning strikes The Tower, and people were thrown off their feet as they tumble toward the earth. This signifies a major upheaval. The second card, the card behind it, is The Emperor and that card is reversed. As you might guess The Emperor signifies established ways and certain stability. When this is turned on its head it is not surprising to see The Tower next to him. The third card is the 2 of Cups. This can signify meeting a soulmate. This could be someone who will work with you for mutual benefit. This could be a very important person in your life.
