The Supreme Court is Handling Trump’s Ballot Case Exactly How We Expected.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Trump will get his way, and be back on the ballot in Colorado and Maine.
Well, I suppose no one should exactly be surprised that drama surrounding former President and reelection hopeful Donald Trump has officially made its way to the Supreme Court. The Justice’s have begun to hear arguments about the states of Maine and Colorado making the move to leave him off the ballot in the upcoming election due to his involvement in the riot that took place on January 6th, 2021. Of course, given the fact that Donald Trump selected three of the nine Justices himself during his tenure as President, I don’t think anyone should be shocked that it’s unfolding the way that it is.
The New York Times reports:
“The Supreme Court seemed poised on Thursday to issue a lopsided decision rejecting a challenge to former President Donald J. Trump’s eligibility to hold office again.
Justices across the ideological spectrum expressed skepticism about several aspects of a ruling from the Colorado Supreme Court that Mr. Trump’s conduct in trying to subvert the 2020 race made him ineligible to hold office under a constitutional provision that bars people who have sworn to support the Constitution and then engaged in insurrection…
…There was very little discussion of the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol or of Mr. Trump’s role in it. But a majority of the justices indicated that they were prepared to rule that individual states may not disqualify candidates in a national election unless Congress first enacts legislation allowing them to do so…”
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this is the fact that it was Justices across the ideological spectrum but frankly, I’m not the least bit surprised. I’m not sure anyone genuinely believes the people responsible for this move in Colorado and Maine expected this to be successful. It just feels like it was nothing more than a swing and a miss, and no one ever really took is seriously.
Of course, Donald Trump knows that.
I’ve already discussed how I doubt he’s even concerned about any of this, and there’s nothing taking place so far that would lead me to change my opinion. And why should he be concerned? It’s a matter of time before he’s back on the ballot, and he knows it. Not only that, but he’ll have another thing to point to when he talks to his base. Another thing to get them riled up and angry about.
They’re all just out to get him, right? He’s the perpetual victim, and he embraces it to the fullest. It keeps his voters engaged and motivated, and he’s going to be mindful of any ways he can find to maintain that.
