The Sum of All Your Experiences Makes You Desirable

How to create the career of your dreams

As a jobs coach and someone who has leveraged hobbies into work opportunities on many occasions I have found that opportunities don’t always come in the form of what you do for pay. They can also come from what you do for fun. Here are three ways I turned my interest into professional jobs.

Brand Manager

I had a podcast back in the day, Relaxation Media. It was one of the world’s top podcasts in the wellness space for a few years. Producing this podcast was the easy part. I had experience shooting and editing videos. And nature videos seemed like a good way to provide a few minutes of relaxation to anyone anywhere.

The tough part was creating a website and blog to support the monthly show. I hired a Pakistani company to create my website. Unfortunately, they quit mid-project, and I ended up building the website myself, despite knowing nothing about content management systems (CMS) or how to build anymore than a one page website. I reached out to some experts and eventually built the site on my own. The success of this venture led me to a position marketing boxing and MMA events across America.

In that position, I managed the company website, created inbound and outbound marketing campaigns, advertised on Google, and even managed an international call center project that brought in $3 million for a single event.

Lesson Learned: When opportunity knocks, raise your hand and take a stab at it.

Corporate Trainer

Besides working as an English teacher for many years, I spent time reading about business, learning about how people learned and following leaders in management and consulting, reading their books, and websites, and listening to their podcasts. When I returned to Japan in 2017, a combination of this knowledge and my business skills landed me a position as a corporate trainer. In that role I delivered a global effective communication program for one of the world’s largest cosmetics companies.

One day a senior instructor at my school asked me how I was able to effectively mentor professionals at all levels of their careers. I told him that I continued to study effective management techniques, professional skills, and communication strategies. Not just at work but outside as well, continuing to develop my craft. This has made me successful in the business arena.

Lesson learned: Never stop learning.

Regional Training Manager

While that is not my current title, it is a good description of my new role. I provide training for my company’s employees and premium customers across the Asia-Pacific region. The company I work for is a software service company (SaaS) in the Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) industry. We have software that allows the IT department to manage a company’s mobile and IoT devices.

My position is very technology-focused. And as a communication skills trainer, maybe it was a stretch to consider me for the job. But as I am getting familiar with the products, I can see they are not so different from the WordPress site I created and manage. Or the LMS (learning management system) I deployed. And the WooCommerce store I implemented with the help of some videos and helpful blog posts to promote my coaching business, Synergy Personal Development.

Not only am I able to understand the tech (speaking the language of tech will take some time), but I also use my skills as a coach, mentor, and trainer to make the content meaningful for our employees. I can attribute this to creating plans and then figuring out solutions on my own.

Lesson learned: If you can envision it, there is a way for you to do it.

So what does this mean for you? If you can not find someone to pay you to build your skills, take it on yourself to develop them. That’s what professionals do. You can create any career for yourself that you want. It is only a matter of how badly you want it. Make the investment in yourself. Take the time to raise your skills. You are worth it.
