Eastbourne UK: Quadrophenia Film Location, Lighthouses, Victorian Pier
The delights of the South Coast

I go to Eastbourne regularly and in recent times we’ve spent a lot of time on the South Downs, trying to stay away from people. It’s a stunning place for a walk, with amazing views out to sea.

There are two lighthouses. The iconic Beachy Head lighthouse in the sea, and Belle Tout, an old lighthouse on the edge of the cliff, that’s been turned into a bed and breakfast. In recent years, it’s been moved away from the cliff due to coastal erosion.

If you’re a fan of the 1970s cult movie, Quadrophenia, you might recognise Beachy Head — it’s where the scooter went off the edge of the cliff in the final scene.
There’s paragliding from the cliffs some weekends, and people cycle and walk in the area too. It’s very beautiful and peaceful, with a visitor centre, places to eat, and a small exhibition. It’s great for secluded walks in the sunshine.
The pier
Below is a view of the beach. Eastbourne’s Victorian pier went up in flames in 2020. The fire started in an amusements arcade and took out the buildings near the road. Fortunately, it didn’t spread to the end of the pier, so the theatre and bar is still standing.

They also have an airshow every summer, and it’s amazing watching the Red Arrows shoot past the pier in formation, followed by the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane.
Eastbourne tourist board prides itself as being one of the sunniest places in the UK; the ‘Sunshine Coast’. They say the town enjoys more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Britain.
Perhaps that’s why it’s a popular tourist destination too. With long sandy beaches, a vibrant town, and events all summer, it’s a lively place to be. Summer activities include a steampunk festival, music events, sporting events, Eastbourne Airbourne, and specialist markets all along the seafront.
