Accessories for YouTubers & Twitch Streamers can be a confusing place. (Picture credit Elgato)

There are so many tools and gadgets online to spend your hard earned cash on. So knowing where to spend your money can be tricky. But being a content creator myself and after spending money on lots of these gadgets, I can confidently say there is one you may overlook, which you definitely shouldn't. Let me explain.

Now everyone is attracted to all the cool peripherals available right now like the Elgato Stream Deck, don't get confused with Valves handheld the Stream Deck! But I feel the Stream Deck is a bit more of an advanced tool and your money would be better spent on something simple which can up your content quality level instantly. Now I have had many good and bad products which are supposedly the best thing since sliced bread for content creators so hopefully my ups and downs in this world can help you!

If you could only pick one thing, I would honestly say a good microphone, but thats not my recommendation here today as I'm talking about something many overlook as its quite “boring” in comparison to the kit we have just mentioned…

Let there be light…

Ok, my recommendation is something many may not think about, and that’s a light. Yep, you heard me right! The Elgato Key Light in particular. Why might you ask is this an essential bit of kit that makes the content creation life easier, well let me give a few quick reasons why I think its a worthy addition to your setup!

You can see the my Elgato Key Light peeking out above my monitor on my setup.

The benefits of the Elgato Key Light?

  1. The Elgato Key Light is VERY bright, like professional level bright without getting into technical specs of lumens and colour range. Trust me it can feel like the sun is sitting directly above your desk, which is great as it can produce that natural light effect if required, giving you control over when you can create professional looking content. You can also change the brightness and light tones easily through the software on your PC!
  2. It connects wirelessly to your PC via the Elgato software which allows you to make changes to your lighting in just a few clicks (and position the light wherever you like as long as its near a plug socket that is)! Also the Elgato software is top notch, with constant updates and I’ve yet to encounter any problems over a few years of use.
  3. For even easier controlling of your Key light on stream or on camera when recording videos, the device integrates seamlessly with the Elgato Stream Deck so you can just press a button on the device to make changes on the fly without having to use your mouse and click on the software which is ideal during a stream.
  4. It does not get hot like other professional lamps can! I can’t understate how nice this is, as its all LED’s. It’s a lot cooler than lights with a bulb in them which can get very hot, and when your streaming with all your gaming rig and monitors giving off heat it can get very warm, so its nice that this doesn’t add to that problem, this also makes it more energy efficient too!
  5. It’s sturdy, it has a really handy desk clamp which I have clamped onto my standing desk which can be positioned easily anywhere you like, and as its on the side of your desk it doesn’t take up any desk space either which is a win win!
  6. It’s reasonably priced for a professional bit of kit, and I got mine back when I went on a spending spree of new gear and surprisingly I use this the most. Even more than my Stream Deck as the Key Light is also amazing for when recording videos or you just need a good light when its dark! Also there are smaller versions available now too which are less expensive if your thinking of giving them a go! With the Key Light Lineup from Elgato compromised of the Key Light, Key Light Air and the Key Light Mini so there is something to suit all levels of creators and budgets.

Should you buy an Elgato Key Light?

I would genuinely recommend these Elgato lights over cheaper lights which are available are they have top build quality and top software which rounds off the package nicely for novice and pro creators alike!

Last but not least I genuinely haven’t had a bad Elgato product yet, I’ve had 2 different capture cards from them, the Stream Deck, the Key Light, the Wave DX mic, the Wave XLR and they have all been fantastic. Hopefully this helps some fellow creators out there and if you have any questions please drop me a comment!
