A testament to man’s ability to achieve the impossible

I am reading a book called — Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. This is the story of Louis Zamperini who was a world war II survivor and an Olympic runner.

Today, I am just going to talk about his Olympic journey.

Louis’s parents came from Italy to the US in the early 20th century. Louis was born in 1917 in California.

Louis was a mischievous child. At an early age, he started stealing things from people and running away. As he grew up, he became short-tempered and started fighting in school. He became a bully and everyone started fearing him. It seemed like he had no future.

However, his brother, Pete Zamperini, saw something in Louis. Pete saw how fast Louis ran whenever he wanted to getaway. Pete believed that Louis could become a good runner. So, Pete started training Louis but Louis was not serious about it. Louis had no aspirations.

One day, Louis was arguing with his father, and the argument got heated up. Louis packed his bag and left the house. A year later in 1933, Louis realized his mistake and he went home. He told his brother that he was going to run from here on and nothing else.

After that, Louis started training seriously and started participating in school events.

Louis was particularly training for a mile (1600 meter) race.

Louis did not take any time to show his determination speed. He became the fastest runner on the school team and broke the record held by his brother, Pete.

Afterward, Louis start participating in state events and became a sensation within a couple of years. Around 1936, Louis was running a mile in 4 minutes and 30 seconds at the age of only 19. But the Olympic trials were only a few months away.

Louis knew that he had to run the race probably around 4 minutes and 10 seconds mark to qualify for the Olympics. But only a few months left he knew it was impossible. He was thinking about the 1940 Olympics already.

One day, he got to know about the 5000 meters race (just over 3 miles). Louis had never run that distance. But he convinced Pete to let him train for it. So, Pete started training Louis for 5000 meters race.

Then, Louis participated in the state competition along with some excellent 5000 meters runners. When Louis finished the race, no runner was even in his sight. He was at least 0.75 miles ahead of everyone.

At that moment, Louis knew that he had a chance.

So, Louis started heading to New York for the Olympic trials. In New York, he had to compete with the best 5000 meters runners from across the country. The top 3 runners were going to be selected for the Olympics in Berlin.

Louis gave his heart out and he was amongst the top 3 (to be precisely 2nd) runners when the trails ended.

So, he only ran four competitive 5000 meters races and qualified for the Olympics.

It does not happen every time. Usually, people train for years and run hundreds of competitive races before becoming one of the best in the world.

The moral of the story is:

Never give up. Louis did not lose hope. When he realized he was not ready for the one-mile race, he gave a chance to 5000 meters race. He trained hard for it and qualified for it.
