The Story of Bjork’s Stalker| Ricardo Lopez
Trigger Warning: Mention of Suicide

The story of Ricardo Lopez is a scary and traumatizing one. Having someone, in this case, you don’t know becoming fixated on you to the point of obsession is nightmarish. This happened to singer Bjork when Ricardo Lopez began to develop a violent obsession with the singer. Not only would this traumatize Bjork, but it would bring an untimely and tragic end to Lopez in the most unexpected way possible.
Ricardo and Bjork
Ricardo Lopez was initially born in Uruguay in January 1975, and his family moved to the southern part of the United States in Georgia. Ricardo was known as a socially awkward introvert, but it was maintained that he had a good relationship with his family. Lopez dropped out of high school, hoping to become an artist, but that did not pan out, so he became a pest exterminator.
Lopez’s reclusiveness became more frequent, and he became obsessed with celebrities. In this case, he became obsessed with Icelandic singer Bjork in 1993. His obsession grew and developed so rapidly that he would write in many diaries totaling over 800 pages. This would come to a halt in 1996. Lopez’s fascination and love for Bjork would turn into anger after it was revealed that she was in a relationship with English music producer Goldie.
A series of video diaries were what Ricardo began filming. In total, he would record eleven tapes. In the videos, he mentioned how he wanted to get revenge on Bjork, planning to kill her. “I’m just going to have to kill her,” Ricardo said. “I’m going to send a package. I’m going to be sending her to hell.”
Ricardo would create a letter bomb using sulfuric acid in a hollowed-out book. He planned to send this book to Bjork’s England residence, and once she received it, the letter would explode and possibly, kill the singer when she opened the book. Upon her receiving the book, he hoped that along with killing Bjork, he planned to kill himself so they would be “united in heaven.”
Death
Ricardo’s final video diary was on September 12th, 1996, titled “Last Day — Ricardo Lopez.” In the video, the package would be mailed out, and he would state that he was not drunk but “know exactly what I am doing.” Ricardo plays a Bjork song, “I Remember You,” and after it finishes playing, he shouts, “This is for you,” and shoots himself in the mouth with his revolver. His body would be found four days later.
The package in question would luckily be intercepted by the Metropolitan Police and was detonated. While Bjork was safe and unharmed, she stated in a statement that she was distressed by the ordeal. “I was very upset that somebody had died. I couldn’t sleep for a week,” she said. “And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t scare the fuck out of me. That I could get hurt and, most of all, that my son could get hurt.”
You can find one of the video diaries on YouTube, but I would caution you because it is pretty disturbing. So disturbing that I do not feel comfortable linking the video down below. While it doesn’t contain the suicide, watching the video made me feel downright uncomfortable.
