The Sound of Geese Landing on Water
A park bench conversation
Just then a large number of geese descended from the sky and landed on the surface of the lake.
After watching the spectacle Henry smiled and spoke up, “You know, water can make a million different sounds. There’s the sound of a waterfall, the sound of rain or hail, the sound of waves crashing in on a beach or the roar of a tsunami, the sound of a leaky faucet, the sound of sprinklers, the sound of a whistling teapot, the sound of a fat kid doing a belly-flop into a swimming pool… To me, the softest and gentlest sound water makes is when geese land on its surface like we just witnessed. There is virtually no splashing involved yet the water surface is impinged upon and creates a very soft, soothing sound.”
Penny responded, “It certainly is a very different sound than when the geese take off in flight from the lake surface.”
“Indeed it is. I think a blind person would be able to sit by this lake and truly enjoy the wide variety of sounds.”
“More reason to have more park benches around the lake.”
Henry laughed, “Yes! Yes, indeed.”
Penny looked at Henry as he looked out over the lake. At that moment he looked like a very happy child.
Henry turned to her, “Penny, there is an ancient saying that has profound truth to it. It goes like this… To be blessed, one must bless.” He was silent for a moment while she absorbed what he said and then he repeated it, this time emphasizing one word, “To BE blessed, one must bless.”
“I thought blessing was something that only popes and saints and other religious leaders did.”
“Yes, they know the power of blessing and they want you to think that only they can do it. But you don’t need some religious title in order to bless. Everyone can do it. It is one of the most powerful things humans can do. To be blessed, one must bless.”
“Penny, there are numerous ways to bless and no one proper or perfect way. The technique I’m going to show you is one particular way of blessing. It’s a way of blessing every single human you ever come into contact with. After you do this for a while you will find that you become blessed with all the joys of life. Of course, that is not why we bless others. If we do it simply in hope of being blessed then we are not doing it unconditionally and the blessing won’t come to us. We do it because it is in our divine nature to do it. It is how we acknowledge and connect to the oneness that connects all humans.”
“One of the main things this technique accomplishes is it takes us out of our noggins,” he once again tapped his forehead with his finger, “and brings us into our hearts.” Henry held his hand over his chest. “Normally when we see another human our brains immediately churn out all sorts of conditioned scripts and then our egos quickly make a judgment. Remember, it is those judgments that keep us from seeing and feeling the oneness that connects us with all humans. This technique is designed to short circuit the habitual perfunctory way we react to other humans. It is only when we react from the heart instead of the noggin that we can touch that oneness.”
