The Smiling Merchant

A poem

There was a lantern merchant Who had a penchant For giving away a one plus Per any individual purchase Suffering loss after loss Was nothing much of a minus He gradually gained peculiar fame: “The merchant of the East With break-even as his aim” Giving away lanterns after lanterns Always in pairs and decorated in quirky patterns Whenever he travelled the valleys The dimly lit streets and alleys Brighter do they shone Illuminations in red, green and purple Lifting briefly worldly trouble The merchant ended his journey In an ancient shrine of vermilion The local children inquired for how much money Would he part with his remaining lanterns Pairs of red, green and purple patterns Were instead gifted to the beaming children The aged merchant sat by the lotus pond To reminisce about life past and bond The floating world was idle As the lantern merchant smiled.
