The Smart Ant

Prose Poem

Once, there was a faceoff between a stout and black and beautiful ant, and a lizard — a slender and sharp baby lizard. A few humans who did not have any other work to do, like a lazy cat, stopped by to observe this slight spectacle and waited with bated breath to see what happens — Though there was nothing of significance in this spectacle to wait with bated breath. As they watched, the lizard would come forward to eat the ant and the ant would curl up and scare the lizard. This continued for some time. Only the ant knew why it curled up every time the lizard came forward to eat it, only the lizard knew why it was taking a step backward when the ant curled up — It was obvious to the humans that this was a stout ant and the baby lizard was having second thoughts about eating it. The humans were babbling and betting among themselves that the sharp lizard would eat the ant, but the lizard was backing off. This continued for some more time. Now, the humans were getting irked and stopped betting on this spectacle, but were still waiting with bated breaths, as though this was worth waiting with bated breaths. They were watching keenly when the lizard came forward again and the ant curled up again, and this time, the lizard turned back and crawled away. The humans were so disappointed with this crushing spectacle that one of them lamented, “smart ant” so as not to accept that their slender and sharp baby lizard was indeed scared!
