The Sky

Reaching the Ground

So easily overlooked: Every day We walk through sky

The sky reaches all the way to the ground, that’s the truth, much overlooked (of course, not that important either).

When I first came across this fact (reading Diane Ackerman’s Natural History of the Senses) I burst out laughing, just for the joy of discovering something: a new thought, a new truth. I had spent well over fifty years on this earth without this ever crossing my mind: the sky does not start up there (thinking clouds, atmosphere, et cetera) it starts right here (thinking ground and feet upon same).

And ever since, when I share this amazing little (or not so little) fact with others I usually see the same smile or laughter as the new thought dawns within.

Just one of those great things.

By the same token, a really heavy fog strikes me as a very low cloud, having settled at the very bottom of the sky.

And, of course, the starry night sky seems to not only reach all the way to the ground but to reach through the ground to encompass the entire planet — just another astronomical body that, by the way, spins around its axis at about 1,000 miles an hour and that travels around the sun at about 1,000 miles a minute. I like that ratio.

And I like it in here today, in my little cabin settled, too, at the very bottom of the sky, while sky-borne rain lashes my windows and washes the trees of the last summer remnants.

A lot of leaves to rake once this storm passes, methinks.
