The Single Most Important Thing for Losing Weight

Nobody ever tells you this. It’s never mentioned in any diet book or plan

Go Hungry

Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry.

Hungry is Good

Hi hungry, nice to meet you. I know you are here to help me lose weight.

Go hungry.

Feel hungry. Feel hunger. Feel like you need to eat. If you want to eat — don’t. Feel that rumble in your belly. You can’t lose weight if you are full. Feel the hunger. Feel it. Feeling hungry is helping you lose weight.

Want to eat? — don’t eat.

Feel hungry- ignore it. Go do something else.

Embrace the Hunger

Hungry is good.

Your brain makes you crave food, whether or not you are hungry It tricks your mind into eating ice cream — even after you have stuffed your face with sausages, there is always enough room left over for that tiny 1,382 calorie dessert.

Crave hunger instead.

Crave the feeling of an empty stomach. Let your body go to work on the excess fat you have stored up. Let yourself be thin. Desire healthy.

Embrace the hunger.

The Trappings of Wealth

My brother has all the trappings of wealth.

He’s got a nice house in the city, a second home by the loch, a Rolls Royce, a Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Tourbillon Watch, high blood pressure, stress, seizures, and a belly that’s like carrying a box of lard with him everywhere he goes.

He is actually overweight by the equivalent of two sacks of potatoes.

Have you thought about losing weight?

I’ve tried.

Did ye aye?

“Did ye Aye?” is the Scottish way of saying “Bullshit.”

I have. I’ve tried. I even went down to one meal a day and it didn’t work. I just can’t lose weight.

Have you tried duck taping your mouth?

Going down to one meal a day is probably a good way of losing weight — as long as that meal isn’t an all you can eat buffet. If it doesn’t work, going back to eating four meals a day, snacking and drinking copious amounts of alcohol will not work either.

You have to stick with it. You have to go hungry.

Feeling Famished

When was the last time you felt famished?

Mad with lust for a sugary snack or a burger and chips isn’t feeling famished — by the way. Be dog-hungry. Eke out the hours of not eating and ride the wave of starving.

Hunger — genuine hunger — comes and goes in waves. Your body tells you when you are hungry. It produces a hormone called ghrelin that is released by the stomach to tell your brain you are hungry. It has other functions, but it is known as the ‘hunger hormone’ because it stimulates appetite, increases food intake and promotes fat storage.

But your body is an amazingly complex organism. After a while, it gets used to the ghrelin and stops listening to it for a while. People can fast for several days without feeling an overwhelming desire to eat all the time. Hunger goes up, then eases off, then goes up and eases off again.

That’s what you have to embrace. Feel famished, feel fabulous.

Nutrition

At the most basic level ‘go hungry’ is rudimentary advice. It doesn’t cover issues with eating disorders or nutrition, I understand that.

You still need good nutrition and you should avoid foods that are bad for you, ultra-processed food for example — you should definitely avoid ultra-processed foods.

For most people dieting fails, not because their chosen method is ineffective, but because they don’t stick to it. We listen to the hype and sign up for quick and easy weight loss. There are more diet books out there than there are hot dinners.

The point of this article isn’t to give in-depth dietary advice. The point is to give you — and me — a slap, a bit of realism. To highlight what is missing from most advice about losing weight.

It’s a reality check.

The Takeaway

Don’t order a takeaway.

Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry. GO HUNGRY. Go hungry. Go hungry. Go hungry.
