The Shattering Of My Black And White

What breaks you in two makes you into one.

Life begins We arrive here one way Precious and innocent Ready to begin life and have our say Ever so slowly we are shaped and molded Just a tiny undetectable bit Every single day By life and all of its circumstances Both easily seen And easily unforeseen

We are made to understand the rules at first We are taught the ways of life Certain things are bad Certain things are good It is either black Or it is white But what I actually found were a million shades of grey And all the colors of the rainbow in between All the colors I had not been taught to see So why didn’t someone call me sooner to say That things wouldn’t always be the way Everybody said they were supposed to be

When everything shatters And explodes into a million minuscule pieces You know instantly they will never fit together again You can’t possibly find them all Or put them back together in the same frame And deep down you know you will never be the same And suddenly nothing else matters And all that you want Is to lie down and sleep to forget But the universe comes in like a lion Hunting you down in the night It won’t let you give up the fight

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction And whether you come from a place of pain or addiction Or if you have ever been running from something Because you thought you had to Because you didn’t know what else to do Because nobody was there to help you And in your own numb and grief-stricken mind You thought it best to go a certain way You thought you didn’t have a say But now you have gone too far And the road back is now no longer the same And you don’t know how to get back again

Why do we focus on what is not Instead of what actually is See you were too busy running for your life Wondering what all you did wrong Wondering what all you did right But now you’ve lost all sense of direction Damned if you didn’t try with all your might Even if you did lose sight

Despite it all There was this dim light during the nightmare Something I could feel to hold on to When I needed to Because there was YOU The YOU that thought it might be groovy To make my life feel like a movie What you took from me you can never give back It is not the sort of thing you can return You left me here to crash and burn Picking up the shards of my own pieces after the attack Pieces that look strange to me Pieces I can no longer recognize

But with every word that I write And every step that I take I am coming back again I know in my mind You might have left me far behind But your flame still burns And the world still turns Life isn’t placed on hold Just because my pain hasn’t been told All the years that go by They do not lie

Then one long summer day When I felt hopeless in every way Suddenly the universe sang to me A mysterious enchanted lullaby For the entire day through And that is when I knew

The universe is as much love as it is genius And when you really need it deep inside your space It is there before you could ever know You needed it in the first place It helps you to unravel When you get too knotted up during your travel

That is when I saw something new Life is not only black Or only white Everything comes together in the end anyway And life is many colors combined

Like a sum of the whole Making you everything you could ever be In your heart And in your soul

Well look at how you grew I almost didn’t recognize you
