WRITING PROMPT RESPONSE

The Shadow of the Night

September Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shadows”

When the moon throws a shadow.

It was the last night of our two-month-long camping trip through southern Africa. David had crawled into the tent while I sat outside on the chair overlooking the majestic mountains of the Khomas Hochland, a highland range in Namibia.

So much was going through my brain. All the experiences we had in the past two months. The places we slept in. The activities we did. The hiking. The diving. The camping. The rain. The cyclone. All of it.

And now it was over.

As I sat there, lost in my thoughts, the last light of the sunset disappeared and slowly but surely, more stars came up in the sky. And then it got bright. Almost daytime bright.

The moon began to rise and lit up the valley. As bright as the moon can only shine down here in Africa. Our home on wheels was throwing a large shadow. So was I sitting here. At night.

I have rarely ever seen such clear shadows at night. But here, in southern Africa, somewhere far from the nearest town and its light pollution, shadows are clean and clear.

Even at night.
