The Seven Republican U.S. Senators Who Voted To Impeach Trump

He wanted revenge and partially got it

Trump lived in The White House for four years.

Senator Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah, recently announced that he will not run for a second term in the U.S. Senate. That was happy news for Donald Trump. Romney was the only Republican senator who voted twice to impeach Trump. The senator was booed at times when he boarded an airplane in Salt Lake City to return to Washington, D.C. after the impeachment vote.

Trump expressed disdain for the Republicans who voted to impeach him after the January 6 riots and promised retaliation. He seemed to expect that none of them would continue to serve in the Congress after voting to impeach him. There were seven Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Most of those Republicans chose on their own not to seek reelection or they were reelected in 2020 and will not come up again until 2026.

What happened to the six others?

Bill Cassidy of Louisiana is a physician who was censured by the Republican Party of Louisiana for voting to impeach. He was reelected in 2020.

Ben Sasse of Nebraska left the senate after being offered a position as President of the University of Florida in January 2023. He received a large salary and became a resident of the same state as Trump.

Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania left the senate in January 2023. He had announced in October 2020 that he would not run for reelection when his term ended.

Susan Collins of Maine has been a senator since 1997. She was reelected in 2020.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is the first Alaska born senator. She was elected to a fourth term in 2022.

Richard Burr of North Carolina announced in 2016 that if he won, he would not seek reelection in 2022.

Trump reportedly made it his mission to see that those who voted to impeach him were defeated in the midterms if they were running. He backed those who were running against them. He may consider that he won.
