Summary

The article "The Serene Sea, A Cure-All Wonder Drug" discusses the therapeutic benefits of spending time by the sea, emphasizing its calming effects on the human psyche.

Abstract

The author reflects on the healing power of the sea, referencing the concept of "Blue Mind" by marine biologist Wallace J Nichols, which suggests that humans are naturally drawn to and healed by water. The article describes personal experiences of serenity found during evening walks along the Chowpatty beach in Mumbai, and it acknowledges the prompt by Monoreena Acharjee Majumdar and Dr. Preeti Singh that inspired the nostalgic recollection. Time spent frolicking in the waves, allowing the white water to tickle our toes, and a stroll along the coast increases our well-being.

The combination of sun, sea and sand is the most natural form of therapy available to humanity.

70% of our human body comprises water. Therefore, we have a natural affinity for it.

According to Wallace J Nichols, a Marine biologist, our brains are hard-wired to react positively to water. Being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and heal us deeply. He calls this state a “Blue Mind” in humans based on his extensive research on the ocean’s ability to induce this state in humans.

A walk along the beach is a must-do for me if I stay close to the sea.

When I read Monoreena Acharjee Majumdar and Dr. Preeti Singh's collaborative prompt, it reminded me of my routine evening walk on the Chowpatty beach near Marine Drive in Mumbai.

I was based in Mumbai for a year and stayed close to the beach at Marine Drive. My office was at the Air India building in Nariman Point. Every evening I would go back from work and take a stroll on the Chowpatty beach before heading home.

The sea and the cool breeze washed away the day’s pain, stress, and negativity. Sometimes I was lucky to watch the evening sun setting the sky on fire during sundown.

The beach is crowded and noisy in the evenings. Despite the noise and the crowd, the cool breeze from the ocean feels relaxing.

At night, a walk along the beach offers a spectacular view of the lit-up coastline. The starry sky, the sound of the waves, the cool breeze and a hot cup of chai are unforgettable experiences.

Thankyou Monoreena Acharjee Majumdar and Dr. Preeti Singh for this beautiful prompt that allowed me to travel back in time and bring back memories of my good time in Mumbai.
