The Serendipitous Moment of Running into a Friend I Hadn’t Seen in a Long Time

An unexpected reunion in the making

A few days ago, I was pulling in to the parking lot of my trusty stationery store to restock on supplies, when in the distance I could see a familiar face leaving the store and walking back to her vehicle. A feeling of joy came over me as I hadn’t seen this friend since well before the pandemic and I was beyond happy to see her again.

In the time it took for me to get out of my vehicle, she had gotten into hers and was looking around to ensure it was safe to back up.

I started walking toward her vehicle, waving emphatically and smiling from ear to ear, in the hope that I could catch her attention and not miss out on this long-awaited opportunity to say hello.

The reason I say long-awaited is that my partner and I have been living in our new place for three and a half years and yet hadn’t crossed paths a single time with this former work colleague despite the fact that she lived in the general vicinity as well.

I was delighted that she noticed me. Rather than backing up, she put the car in park and started rolling down the window.

The closer I got, my smile got bigger (if that was even possible) as I enthusiastically exclaimed, “Long time no see! How’s it going?”

But when I was about 20 feet from her vehicle, I froze. My smile was replaced by a look of shock.

I paused, looked at the woman and said, “Oh my God! I’m so sorry. You’re not who I thought you were.”

She continued smiling as she responded, “I kinda figured… coz I don’t recognize you.”

I then explained “You look so much like a very dear friend I haven’t seen since before the pandemic… like two peas in a pod.” I then went on to apologize, “I’m so sorry to have disturbed you.”

She took it in good stride, still smiling, as she said, “I’m not. You actually made my day. You looked so happy to see me!”

Naturally, I was relieved that she let me off the hook from one of life‘s embarrassing moments as I tend to encounter from time to time… sometimes I think, more than average.

I followed up with “Thanks for being such a good sport about the situation. Have a great day!”

She replied, “You too” then rolled up her window, backed up and drove off.

What is truly staggering is that she really was my friend’s doppelganger in so many ways, right down to the same walk. Given the circumstances, it didn’t take long for me to forgive myself. She really did look like my friend.

Just the same, despite my embarrassment at mistaking a complete stranger for a good friend, I’m glad it all worked out and that we both ended up with a funny story to share with our friends.
