The Seekers Club
When someone quits
They met every other Tuesday evening. It was not a typical support group. While they all had one thing in common — which is that they were all seeking something — they were all seeking different things.
Gabriella and Jenny were seeking the perfect husband. Trevor and Powell were seeking the perfect wife. Marco was seeking a new career. Justin was seeking immense wealth. Idla, Ariel, Frank, Joseph, and Brian were seeking spiritual enlightenment. Hayley and Ethan were seeking friends. Raoul was seeking a better job. Gilberto was seeking a new sports car. Francine was seeking the perfect house to live in. Brandon was seeking power and influence. Sissy, Georgina and Russell were seeking fame. Nicasio was seeking freedom from addiction. Sandy and Talia were seeking creative inspiration. Billy was seeking revenge. Thornton was seeking mental stability. Jaspar was seeking an angel investor. Matt, Colby and Ronny were seeking energy independence. Camila was seeking a gold medal. Franklin was seeking a Nobel Prize. Numerous others were seeking happiness.
They were all seekers and they devoted their lives to seeking. When they came together in their meetings they shared their stories of success and failure. They poured their hearts out, inspiring their fellow seekers to not give up.
Never Give Up, was the official motto of the group.
After taking attendance for three consecutive meetings it was realized that Greg was no longer attending meetings. Greg was one of those seeking happiness. Trevor, Ethan and Talia were tasked with going to Greg’s house to find out why he was no longer attending meetings and to encourage him not to give up and return.
When they arrived at Greg’s house they found him playing with his dog. They were chasing each other around the front yard of Greg’s home.
Seeing the three club members approaching him, Greg stopped playing with the dog and faced them. (The dog kept running around.)
“Hi Greg,” said Ethan. “We’ve noticed that you have stopped coming to meetings. We’re worried about you. We’re here to help. We’re here to encourage you not to give up. So why did you stop coming?”
“Oh, that. Well, I decided to quit.”
Talia asked, “You’ve quit the group? But why?”
“Yeah, I quit the group but more importantly I decided to quit seeking.”
Trevor, Ethan and Talia collectively and simultaneously gasped.
“I figured that if I’m spending all my time seeking happiness then I’m not spending my time being happy. If I’m spending all my time seeking I won’t have any time being happy and I’m sick and tired of seeking. I am proudly no longer a seeker.”
Trevor’s, Ethan’s and Talia’s jaws collectively and simultaneously dropped.
Ethan spoke up, “Oh, Greg! It pains me to see you like this. I am so sad that you have given up so easily. Please come back to the meetings so that we can give you the encouragement and love you need to keep seeking.”
“Ethan, giving up was really, really easy and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done! I’m so much happier now.”
Talia began crying, “Oh Greg, we miss you so much. We really love you and want to help. Don’t turn your back on us. Come back and get the help that you need.”
“Talia, I love you, too, but I don’t need help and I no longer belong in your group because I am no longer a seeker.”
Talia’s crying intensified. Trevor gently put his hand on her shoulder as he guided her to return to the car, saying softly, “We can’t help him if doesn’t want to be helped.”
The dog barked at the three club members as they returned to their car.
