What is success?

Someone who wants to publish their writing on a popular publication. Someone who wants to be a rock star. Even someone who wants to get more than $1000 per month while they sleep.

So, I claim that success is when people can achieve their achievement.

Now, I won’t explain how to achieve it. It’s too long because everyone has different achievements. How to achieve your achievement is not a necessary thing. There must be a secret that has never been revealed by many successful people.

I have researched what’s behind the scene of successful people. Here is what I found.

They have failed hundreds of times.

Jackie Chan might be an alien if he manages to pull off every stunt in one take.

I watched a video Steve Harvey interviewed Jackie Chan on Youtube. Then, he mentions how many bones Jackie Chan broke for his amazing film.

From here, I learned that behind the incredible Jackie Chan’s film, it turns out that they repeat and take a lot of shots. I didn’t expect to make one good move, they need 120 shots.

So far, there are three things I understand from failure:

1. It motivates me to reach achievement in different ways
2. I have to strive more to provide the best for everyone, — my work is not yet worthy of acceptance in society
3. If I quit, I fail to reach my dream. — Quit is an appropriate word for someone who wants to kill their dream.

Being a failure is normal. No matter how much you do; you will not know. At least, you understand there are some benefits of being a failure.

They always serious about their strategy

I know you want to achieve something big or small quickly. But sometimes you are not brave enough to pass the tough times and push through the pain to reach your goal.

Planning is very easy. But the most difficult thing for me is to be consistent and persistent. Every time I get stuck, I want to go back to bed. I don’t want to continue the project, because I lack motivation or ability to achieve my dream. Or, badly, I just played around with the plan.

If I want to be serious to reach my dream, I have to be serious. I found three strategies used by successful people to achieve their dream.

1. Discipline with their plan and their future. — Creating a plan for a short time is a must. But, creating a plan for the future is necessary. Future may change, and they can revise it later. At least, they know what to do next.
2. Kill bad habits and distractions — They are well aware of what their bad habits are. Also, they know anything that is interfering with their work. they can handle it well.
3. Manage and track your time — How long have you been working? What activities have you done today? Did you do well today? If not, what’s bothering you? Track your routine every hour and evaluate it every time before you sleep to improve your next day.

Strategy is not about improving your skills. But, the strategy can increase your productivity and focus. The more seriously you make this goal, the more consistent you are productive. The more productive you are, the easier to reach your achievement. That’s your success!

They don’t rely on others

Others don’t make you successful. They only cheer you up.

Rely is more powerful than depends. When you rely on someone, you have total trust in them to do what you have said.

It is not good. By relieving stress on yourself, you, by accident, make you feel like you need them.

In psychological studies, there are three bad impacts of relying on other people.

1. You’ll never grow
2. You won't reach your dream
3. it will stunt your growth

The opposite of relying on others is confidence. When you feel confident, you believe that you can do it by yourself.

Besides, confidence is attractive to trust and make people believe in you. It’s important for your client. You can connect with the client to make them happier.

Only you can make your day. You have to be confident every day!

They make their audience happy

I believe everyone can’t stand alone; a businessman needs customers, a singer needs audiences, a writer needs readers. a filmmaker needs viewers, and so on.

Do you want to make a product without a buyer?

Certainly not!

As Aristotle said, humans are social creatures. We will never stop interacting with other people.

What makes businessmen successful is they know what customers need and want. They are the ones who are capable of making it happen. So, whatever you do, make sure that you fulfil your client's needs.

In addition to humans as social creatures, we are also the only one creatures who have the ability to judge other people. We often give our impressions about other people when we meet or see them; in real life or even in social media. The personal impression is made quickly.

Successful people make other people happy when they see you.

This kind of interaction will not be made by itself. They have their ability to attract their audiences. Not only make them have fun, but also engage them closely to receive their ideas. So, they will make their audience willing to influence them.

Remember, you can’t make everyone happy!

The successful businessman has a lot of experiments to attract their customers. They can do the ordinary to the extraordinary way to attract them to buy their product. Not only buying, but the customer is also proud of what they bought.

Based on my experience, there is the simplest way to find someone who respects you more.

You need to know that I would never share my writing with my parents and my friends. Because I know, they won’t read my article.

So, the only way I found my reader by joining the community. I found many Medium Writer groups on Facebook. This is the perfect place; we write, we share, we read, and we support each other.

You can search for your audience, customer, reader, viewer or anything else in your way. If you have no support like me, try to search for a community online.

They know when to say “No!”

It was my first time being rude to my close friend. He asked me to join his business. I refused. I was very busy with my freelance. I already told him. Then he forced me to join. I said loudly “No!”

That is the worst mistake I’ve ever made. I hope I can say “No!” more responsible.

These two words have a strong meaning and are very difficult to use. “No!” is an important word to make sure that you keep staying with your plan. Being able to say “No!” can be rude for others. But, you can explain why you need to say it. Not to harm or damage other people’s business, but it is used to defend your business.

Learning to say “No!” is an art form. A successful person knows when to say “No!” at the right time. You should learn it too.

They love to Seek their knowledge and grow more their skill.

It was the most annoying time after I finished my article on Medium. I am proud “Hooray! They publish my story!” Then silence in 5 minutes. I was confused “Now what?”

Successful people believe that if you focus only on the result, all your happiness and pride only for a moment. But, if you focus on having fun, improving, exploring and experimenting, your motivation will be filled up again. Keep learning about what you can improve on your skills. Learning new skills will keep you fresh and well prepared.

They see things for what they are

Successful people see things as they have right now, and develop as time goes on.

I have a dream that I want to have a Macbook. But, I accept the reality that using a Macbook doesn’t mean my writing skill increased. But that doesn’t mean the Macbook is useless. Happiness can facilitate work and increase the spirit of productivity and willpower.

Willpower gives us the strength to fight the negative traits, such as procrastination and lack of confidence in ability. It is the inner spirit to find your motivation and to keep productive even when you are tired and anxious.

When you don’t have someone to cheer you up, I read John C. Maxwell’s book, Make Today Count, where I found the solution to fight the negative traits.

Remove these words in your mind:

1. I can’t do it
2. If I was
3. I am not sure
4. I don’t have time
5. Maybe
6. I am afraid
7. I am not confident

Save these new words in your mind:

1. I can do it
2. I will do it
3. I know
4. I will make time for it
5. Of course!
6. I believe I can do it
7. I am 100% sure

In that way, your willpower for success is still well preserved.

They do not care about what others think they should do

Did you become a writer on Medium because you saw a video from Shelby Church that can earn you $ 2000 for just 1 hour of writing? Do you need to spend time seeing how happy successful people are? Certainly not!

Social media seems to influence other people easily. You spend 2 minutes scrolling through Instagram, and it’s easy to claim that your friends are happier, healthier, and wealthier as they showed their latest post.

Unfortunately, it shows that you envy your friends on social media and it leads to depression:

1. You start comparing yourself with others
2. They change your mindset
3. You don’t look at reality
4. You feel everything is unfair.
5. They are more successful than you.

It’s not that you can’t use social media, but I suggest you limit and filter all the information on social media. We as spectators never know what behind or the reality is. They won’t show it.

Besides, a successful person is not about looking for other people’s success. They made their success.

Treat everyone like human

I want to tell you a funny and resentful story based on my experience.

It was noon, I had prayed in a beautiful mosque in Bandung. Then there was one beggar little boy and one beggar little girl came to me. They sell their boxes of tissue.

“Sir, would you like to buy a box of tissue? It’s only 5 thousand Rupiahs (around $0.50)” The boy asked.

“Okay, then I will buy 2 boxes. So it will be 10 thousand Rupiahs.” Not because of the tissue, but I wanted to help him.

“Why don’t you buy them all sir? We only sell 3 more boxes.” He asked.

“My apologies, I can’t. I ran out of money.” I answered with a little bit of laugher.

“Ohh it’s fine sir. Thank you so much!” He smiled.

“Yes, you are welcome!” I replied.

Then the beggar girl asked me calmly, “how much money do you have left, sir?”

In my deepest heart, I said, “HOW RUDE YOU ARE!”

I glared and smiled at her fiercely. Then, I said the truth, “I have 5 thousand Rupiahs left on my wallet.” and showed them how empty my wallet was.

She came back to offer, “Well sir, there is still enough money to buy this one left tissue box.”

“Sorry, I can’t. This money will be used to pay the parking fee.” I said.

Then she left with a disgusted face. But, the boy smiled at me before he left and said: “Have a good day, Sir!”

You see how these two kids treat their customers differently. Whatever you do, please don’t treat your customer like a customer! It’s so annoying! Treat them like a human! We are all ordinary humans who need money and life too.

Around 86% of customers will pay more to get more experiences. By giving your client personal attention, not only a short time but the customers are willing to frequent your business every time they need your product or services. This can grow your customer and increase the revenue significantly now and into the future.

There are 4 ways to treat your client like a human.

1. Say please.
2. Say thank you.
3. Make it easy for them.
4. Understand what they want and they do not want.

Successful people have good behaviour and a good connection with each other. Don’t forget to be grateful and compliment others!

Conclusion

The meaning of success can be different, but still, the true meaning of success is when you can achieve your dreams. If you find out how other people can succeed, it will be very difficult for you to find it because everyone achieves it in different ways.

I believe successful people are ordinary humans. So, I don’t ever believe in overnight success.
