The Secret to Writing Consistently
It’s not overly complicated, but so many people miss it
If you are at the beginning of your online writing journey this story is for you.
It starts out with the reality that writing consistently is difficult. Let’s put you into the main character of our story for one minute and see if you can relate. Our story starts with a person.
Sam Struggles to Write
Sam is the average person who hates their job and wants to do something she loves. She recently realized that she has a love of writing and has decided to start blogging or writing on some online platform.
Her first week up and running, she cranks out ten pieces or 500 words or more. She publishes them all at once and then doesn’t write again for a month. This frustrates her and so she forces herself to sit down and do it again.
This time, she writes ten pieces and spreads them out over ten weeks. During this time she writes a few more articles to add in, but can’t seem to figure out how people write every publish every day or even write every day.
Months go by. Sam writes feverously for a while and then takes weeks off at a time. Consistency is killing her, but everywhere she looks, she reads articles about how important being consistent is to succeeding online.
She needs to find the secret to writing consistency.
The Secret to Writing Consistently
The key is to writing consistently is to create a habit that you do every day. Once you create that habit of writing every day, you are able to be consistent at writing and publishing at whatever pace you wish to do so.
But, how do we get started?
What has worked best for me and keeps me writing to this day is scheduling my writing time. My time to write always starts at 6 am and then I write until 7 am. This is my set time every day no matter what.
I also write in the same place every day. We have a guest bedroom that we turned into an office for my day job. In this room, however, we have set up a small place for my morning writing. It has a comfortable chair with a side table.
I write from 6 am to 7 am every morning in that spot without fail. Well, aside from my one-year-old waking up early and messing up my habit. The thing about it is that after doing this for months, even if I get thrown off, I still can get back on the wagon without issue.
This is the secret:
Set your time and place to write. Do it every day for a month.
You create a habit by doing these three things. That habit will then sustain you through difficult periods of writing or interruptions to your regular schedule.
This is how you create a sustainable writing habit.
Sam Begins to Write Consistently
Sam finally comes across this short article about the secret to writing consistently. The crazy thing is how simple the steps are to creating the habit she so desperately desires.
She decides to start writing during her lunch break at work. Every day she walks to the corner coffee shop by her office and writes for 45 minutes every day. This daily writing habit helps her publish two to three times a week.
Over time, she grows an email list, gets better as a writer, makes a few dollars online, and publishes her first book. All of this is just a few months. And it all started with setting a time and place to write. Then committing to do it for a month. And now, she is turning her writing into something more than a hobby.
