Summary

The narrative reveals the emotional burden of carrying someone else's secret that has become widely known, questioning the nature of secrets when they are shared.

Abstract

The author recounts the experience of being entrusted with a secret that is emotionally taxing and potentially damaging to others. Despite not asking for this responsibility, the author observes the calm demeanor of the woman who shared the secret, even as it becomes a topic of gossip. Over time, the secret's weight grows, and the author realizes that the woman's true character is not reflected in the secret. The author is haunted by the realization that the secret is no longer confined, suggesting that it has lost its essence as a secret, becoming a piece of common knowledge.

Opinions

  • The author perceives the secret as a heavy burden, indicating a sense of moral obligation and discomfort.
  • There is a contrast drawn between the woman's serene exterior and the turbulent nature of the secret she carries.
  • The author implies that the secret has been trivialized by its widespread knowledge, undermining its initial significance.
  • The author seems to reflect on the paradox of a secret being commonly known, questioning the concept of a secret itself.
  • There is an underlying criticism of gossip culture and its impact on individuals' lives.

The Secret

What She Keeps Talking About

Photo by Kristina Flour on Unsplash

I was told a secret She handed me to keep, One that can break another One that can make her weep.

This thing I didn’t even ask It seems more like a burden, Walking around the crowd Knowing what is forbidden.

I saw that lady in her gossip I couldn’t stare in pity, She was guileless, calm Despite her thrown reality.

Days and months have passed I felt that burden rot, She ain’t what she’s told That secret which she is not.

What haunts me is knowing I’m not the only one who knew, That secret everyone’s talking Guess it’s everyone’s secret too.
