The Seas Merely Tolerate You

Disrespect will only sink us to the bottom

Sailors, pirates, divers, scientists, and fisherfolk understand they are allowed to travel all over and within Earth’s circulatory system, the sea, on the planet’s whim.

The blood of the Earth is known to kill any they wish, young and old, experienced or amateur, rich or poor.

Sometimes the unknown depths reflect what surrounds Earth’s body- vast, cold space we have barely charted. “As above, so below.”

We ask for pleasure, for plenty, for safe passage, escape from tyranny and we still die in the salty blood.

We are born of Earth, our bodies containing the same elements in our tiny, circulating seas.

We drink from Earth’s springs, rivers, and the ground waters like insatiable infants and they cannot keep up- we will drink them dry.

The inner veins, capillaries, arteries, are clogged with ships, planes, treasure, bones, trash, waste, weapons, marvels, and civilizations long past.

Some on the land believe they can buy a ticket to view the darkness, the tragedies, the alien life waiting.

They underestimate what Earth can swallow and digest.

What Earth can expel.

The seas of Earth tolerate us, barely, like a virus.

Money will not buy the Earth’s respect.

Getting to know the entity that gives us life - that will buy some time.

Maybe.

Note: This was written after I read about the Titan submersible disaster. I do not think true exploration can be bought by wealthy tourists. I think it was a disaster in the making. I believe the earth we live on can be studied and hopefully better understood, with true respect and a concern for the planet. Not just making a buck.

Thanks for reading!
