Summary

The Helix Nebula, captured by NASA's Hubble Telescope, has been sonified to produce an audio representation, providing insights into this distant, expanding cloud of gas and dust that reflects the potential future state of our own solar system.

Abstract

The "Scream of Hell" refers to the auditory representation of the Helix Nebula, a vast nebula located 695 light-years away in the Aquarius constellation. This nebula, which resembles the human eye, is a massive structure several times larger than our solar system. The sonification process has converted the nebula's infrared light into sound, with higher pitches assigned to blue colors and lower pitches to reds, enhancing scientific study and offering auditory experiences for those with color blindness. The Helix Nebula's evolution from a red giant to a white dwarf has produced fascinating phenomena, such as hydrogen filaments the size of our solar system moving like comets. As the nebula continues to expand, it provides a glimpse into the future of our sun and solar system, which will face a similar fate in approximately 500 million years.

Most of you have heard of the “Scream of hell” reference. It referred to the recently released sonified audio of the Helix Nebula(NGC 7293) which was taken by NASA’s Hubble Telescope. I’ll put the link to the audio here.

To start with, A Nebula is a giant cloud of dust and gas in space. It could be the remains of a dead star(after supernova)or the birth of a new star. The Helix Nebula is 695 light-years away from us and Is among the Aquarius constellation. It resembles the pupil of the human eye. It has a width of around 3 light-years! Which is way more than our solar system. If we are looking at Helix nebula now, we will be seeing it as it was 695 light-years before or even more than that due to the vast expansion of the gases. The image caught will be in the infrared region it’s given different colors and it is converted to the visible region. The light of the white dwarf is reflected by the gases. What we are seeing in the photo is more like what we see of a building from the top view. It can contain hundreds of solar systems like ours. The gases are expanding drastically due to the conversion from a red giant to a white dwarf.

The transition from a red giant to a dwarf had occurred more than 10,600 years ago. The most interesting part of the Helix nebula is that it contains objects like hydrogen filament which Is as the size of our solar system moving like comets. These sightings are really rare and scientists are yet to discover the reason for this phenomenon. It's also one of the oldest planetary nebulas to be discovered. The inner region of the nebula moves at 30 km/s and the outer region at 40km/s towards the outside but we can’t easily spot its difference due to the viewpoint. As time progresses(millions of years), it starts to cool down, and then won't be able to spot again.

It is also the state of our sun and solar system after 500 million years. The presence of life on earth will be wiped out way before the supernova occurs. We all are lucky to see this phenomenon. Betelgeuse (Thiruvathira) is another star who will be joining Helix nebula soon. The studies are still going on related to this nebula. Now, sonification is a process of converting the light signal to a sound signal. It's done to do more studies on the nebula. Here, the blue color is assigned higher pitch and red color lower pitches as per the frequency increase. This technology has also been used for people who lost their sense of color. Humans have been here for millions of years yet interstellar space remains a mystery.
