Summary

The article discusses the unintended negative consequences of boycotting Russian-named businesses and products in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the need for more informed and constructive actions.

Abstract

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the world has been moved to action, but often these reactions have been misguided, causing harm to innocent Russian business owners and employees in places like Manhattan. The article highlights the plight of Russian restaurants and vodka distillers in the U.S., such as Russian Samovar and Russian Vodka Room, which have seen a significant downturn in business due to misplaced outrage. The piece argues that such actions, including the dumping of Stolichnaya Vodka—which is no longer Russian-made—are symbolic but ultimately ineffective. Instead, the author suggests that those looking to make a difference should consider donating to relief organizations, holding prayer vigils, or volunteering, as these actions directly support those affected by the conflict. The article concludes by urging individuals to channel their energy into useful activities that genuinely aid the situation rather than destructive gestures that hurt small businesses.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the outrage over the invasion should be channeled into constructive actions rather than misplaced gestures that harm innocent people.
  • The article conveys that boycotting businesses with Russian names or connections is an ineffective way to protest the invasion and does not impact Russian leadership or oligarchs.
  • It is pointed out that many Russian-named businesses and their owners are also appalled by the invasion and do not support it.
  • The author suggests that actions such as donating to relief organizations, holding prayer vigils, or volunteering are more meaningful ways to support those affected by the conflict.
  • The article criticizes the dumping of vodka brands like Stolichnaya and Smirnoff as an empty gesture, given that these brands are not Russian-made or owned.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of not letting ignorance lead to the destruction of someone's dream, referring to the hard work and sacrifice of immigrant business owners.

The Russian Invasion of Ukraine and Knee-Jerk Reactions

Channel your outrage by doing something useful

An outraged world watches in horror as Russia violates International law. The invasion of Ukraine has spurred people to action. It’s too bad that their misplaced outrage is hurting innocent people. Many of them are small business owners.

Russian Samovar, a restaurant in Manhattan, business is down by sixty percent. The owner of the restaurant and his employees have nothing to do with the war, and they want the war to end.

Russian Vodka Room in New York is being harassed on the phone. Things have become so bad. Both restaurants display Ukrainian flags outside their restaurants.

Don’t waste good vodka

Vodka Distillers are also affected. Bar owners across the country are protesting the invasion by dumping Stolichnaya Vodka. I’m sure it feels good for them to do this, and I’m sure their customers approve, but it’s an empty gesture.

Stolichnaya is no longer made in Russia. It’s made in Latvia and the Company is headquartered in Luxemburg. Smirnoff Vodka is another Brand that’s Russian in name only.

Smirnoff is owned by a British Spirits Company and is manufactured in Illinois.

Do something that matters

If people feel the need to do something, they could donate to relief organizations. They could hold prayer vigils. They could volunteer in many ways.

Hurting a business with a Russian name doesn’t hurt Putin or the Oligarchs. It does hurt the small business that an Immigrant has sacrificed to build.

If you asked them, many of the businesses with Russian names and the small businesses with Russian owners, are as appalled as you are of the whole thing.

Final Thought:

If you feel the need to help or take a stand do something useful. Don’t destroy someone’s dream by being ignorant.
