The Road Less Travelled-Enjoying The First Ski Outing This Season
Volume 20-Skiing at Bowman Lake NY State Park

Welcome back to my popular series involving outdoor adventure. Last week I was able to get out my cross-country skis for the first time this season. So far this season, we have received snow here and there but it hasn’t stayed thus far. Overall, the weather has been very changeable and for the most part mild for this time of year here in Central NY.

For those of you who follow my articles, you know I love Bowman Lake Park and visit here often, all seasons of the year. Each season brings a different experience. Earlier in December I wrote an article about a hike here.

We haven’t received more than a few inches at a time like I mentioned above. So I took advantage of a snowfall last week. It wasn’t going to last more than a day or so. The temperatures were in the upper thirties. I expected that maybe the skiing wouldn’t be good; usually at these temperatures the snow sticks to the skis.
I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t bad. Hardly a mid-winter experience, but good enough to get a 2 mile ski outing in. And the snow didn’t stick. Not too bad. It felt good to get out and enjoy the change of seasons we have here in the Northeast. It was foggy, eerily so; I don’t believe I’ve ever skied in the fog. It certainly was a unique experience.

I stuck to the campground roads as there wasn’t nearly enough snow cover in the woods. Hopefully we will get more snow soon and get into a more consistent winter pattern. Time will tell.
