POETRY | UNREQUITED LOVE
The River and the Sea
Love, unrequited, though costly to the one, to the other free

The River and the Sea
All the magic I possess, all the protection Mine to offer, and all the light the fire Within me sheds in your direction Are yours to help you on your way — Yours to take, to use, Even to refuse. Yours to your beginning.
But take at least the love That drives my fumbling efforts Knowing that like the river From the mountain to the sea It freely flows To you From me.
Raging over falls sometimes, Sometimes current sweeping strongly, And in broad, deep pools Sometimes lolling calmly, Ever from its source Ever to its end, Though diverted round this or that bend Ever faithful to its course It freely flows To you From me.
And like the sea That cares not for the State of being of its friend, Nor if it cared could ease the burden Of the river’s reach, Nor prevent the fresh inundation, But quietly accepts the precious gift flowing Onward to its beach, Take these my effort and my love knowing They could have made no other destination.
They are meant for you, Belong to you, Indeed for you were created, Like the river and sea, The gift though costly For the one, to the other free. By the Fates ordained to be.
