‘The Right to Write’-by Julia Cameron

Chock full of inspiration and wonder (Book Review)

This book was so damn INSPIRING!

It was well written, clear and chock full of amazement.

I didn’t want it to end.

It is a total gem.

Julia Cameron had already written the classic The Artists Way which was a best selling phenomenon. I remember in my early 20s that was my go to book to get my brain creatively moving. It warmed my soul. There have been many classes and workshops designed around that book since it was written. I’ve attended a few.

But, this book was catered more toward the writer specifically. The Right to Write encourages writers in much the same way that the Cameron’s previous work The Artist’s Way encourages artists in general.

The main focus of The Right to Write is to “heal writers who are broken, initiate writers who are afraid, and entice writers who are standing at river’s edge, wanting to put a toe in…”

This book is less a “how to” book than a “why” book. I love feeling totally connected to my ‘why’. If not connected to the ‘why’ we writers can fizzle out and lose momentum.

As long as you realize this is not a “how to” book, you will get a lot out of this.

This book is for people who are searching for a reason to write, a passage through emotional or creative blocks, or reasonable “permission” to write.

You will come through this book feeling like you have a right to write. If nothing else.

One major point made in the book is that writers don’t have to know what they want to say; Once the writer begins the creative process, images and words will become available for the writer to use.

Cameron recommends that writers do writing exercises.

These include:

  • free-writing,
  • writing a list of things the reader may value,
  • observing or writing about the reader’s surroundings,
  • or taking a walk to gain inspiration and insight.

The “Artist Date” and “Morning Pages” are exercises recommended in both The Right to Write and The Artists Way.

An “Artist Date” is time a writer sets aside to engage, alone, in activities that stimulate creativity and supply the writer with inspiration.

If you want to jump start your writing life I highly recommend this book. It stands on it’s own as a wonderful book that I plan to read again soon!
