The Riff’s August Album of the Month
Meeting on Sunday, August 8th @ 7pm EDT
You guys, last Sunday (7/11/21) was Riff’s July Album of the Month Club meeting, and as you probably expected, it was awful. Hosted by Terry Barr (more on him later), the meeting derailed with Jessica Lee McMillan’s real-time intelligence and thoughtfulness (ew), stayed off course when If Ever You’re Listening added his limited yet refreshing insights (gross), and David Acaster shared unfluffy, matter-of-fact knowledge (what the hell?). Where were all the snobby know-it-alls with their edgy exclusivity?!?
They never showed. The most exclusive thing about the evening was whatever product Rob Janicke uses on his hair to keep it that perfect, and I’m guessing he’ll tell you if you ask (smh).
What did show was palpable respect and interest in each other and David mother-freaking Bowie. I knew very little and kept referring to him as The Goblin King. And you know what? I saw not one judgmental eye roll. The worst of them all was Terry Barr. He really should see someone about his kindness and consideration problem.
But You should definitely come to the next one.
As the meeting was winding down, Terry announced it was time to vote for the next Riff Album of the Month Club host — the person who chooses the album and facilitates the meeting. There was a countdown, and then names began scrolling up the chat.
Gulp!
Dear reader, they chose me. Muahahaha!
I accepted, exited the call, then realized I’d signed up for an impossible task: Choose. Just. One. Album.
One. Out of a lifetime of music across all generations and genres.
I fell to my knees then shout-whispered into the universe, “How does one choose?!?”
My son, who just happened to be standing beside me, watching my drama unfold, said calmly, “ Choose the one with the best story.”
And immediately I knew. Well, I texted a friend, who seconded my son’s advice, and then I knew.
So, though it pains me to skirt past several significant albums, the story of how this album came into my life makes it the obvious choice. (I’ll tell that story at the end of the meeting.)
I present to you the The Riff’s August Album of the Month:
