The Rhythm of the Rain Beats to the Seasons in Our Hearts

After sorrow we dance toward a brighter tomorrow

What a coincidence that I wrote this on Sunday as our first rain in two weeks arrived after a fortnight of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 35° Celsius most days.

I could smell the petrichor wafting in through the kitchen door, drifting over to bless me at my desk. How delicious to breathe in the fresh cool air — my lungs were singing in delight.

I stepped outside for a brief cold shower — so cooling and invigorating!

Isn’t it fascinating how we often complain about the rain — too much, too little, too wet, too hard, too soft — yet we love to sing about it?

Because I love music almost as much as I adore writing, I’m sharing songs about the rain in my story.

Many artists have written about this life-giving element of nature which brings joy to the mountains, sparkles in rivers and streams, and quenches the thirst of flora and fauna.

Rain washes away the dust in our hearts and city streets — and cleanses the soul.

The first song I heard about rain when I was little was from the movie of the same name — Singing in the Rain — with Gene Kelly dancing in the rain. I recall how my dad could do a Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire routine with his nimble feet. He was a wonderful tap dancer too!

A special memory!

The following songs familiar to me mention rain in their lyrics — sometimes metaphorically and other times in a literal sense. They awaken my senses and I hope they do likewise for you!.

A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall — Bob Dylan (2016 Nobel Prize in Literature)

Fire and Rain — James Taylor

Here Comes the Rain Again — Annie Lennox/Dave Stewart

Music comforts me when I’m sad.

It’s agonizing saying goodbye to Dr. Preeti Singh as an editor on Reciprocal . Your Nature prompts have been a source of inspiration and I will miss you. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this community what it is — a family.

I bid you farewell from South Africa and dedicate this encore song to you.

Bless the Rain Down in Africa — Ndlovu Youth Choir
