The Remake of Starry Night for Only $50
The Untold Talent of 12-Year-Old Girl from the Land Below the Wind
Did you know that Vincent van Gogh did not start painting until he reached the age of 27? And it was his brother, Theodore van Gogh who discovered his artistic talent and encouraged Vincent to concentrate more on his drawings.
Another quite-the-same story took place on the other side of the world — Sabah, the Land Below the Wind or also known as The North Borneo when it was still under the British colony. Born a little Bornean girl named Ameena Asyari — having the same passion as van Gogh — To admire arts.
Just like other ordinary kids, Ameena started playing with colors, drawing cartoons, and even drawing on the house’s floor with colorful chalks — never did her mom knows she has a gifted kid at home. Just like Ameena, her other sisters are into arts as well — like drawing, making origami, creating crafts just to mention a few — the mom thought those are just pastime activities for her children at home during the weekends. They are just kids who prefer to play stuff and try on new things and have fun.

Ameena began to paint at the age of five and her interest in painting has developed ever since. She started taking painting lessons, together with her elder sister, Khadeeja — at Noah’s Art and Crafts. There she learned about color blends, sketching, the basics of oils and watercolors, and other several artistic skills. Along the course, her Art Teacher discovered that Ameena has an artistic personality that enables her to stay focused on her artwork — enthusiastically.

It took a couple of days for Ameena to complete what she has started. On Day One, her mom (Mrs. Naziah) and her class teacher (Mrs. Rosliza) helped her to paint the wall of the class corridor with the base color. Later on, painted it again with mustard. On Day Two, Ameena began her ‘remake of Van Gogh' (I was tackled by this caption on Mrs. Naziah’s Instagram — when she posted a photo of her daughter with the mural painting). Mrs. Naziah added that the whole project cost them around $50 USD to buy the mural painting items (about RM200 in Malaysian Ringgit). Why Van Gogh’s Starry Night?
Ameena’s choice of van Gogh’s masterpiece reminds me of van Gogh's life history. Not much of us know that he remained an unknown artist back then — only one of his paintings was sold during the course of his life. Interestingly, it was not The Starry Night. Obviously, not all things are meant for money or publicity I supposed. The same goes for this girl. She doesn’t even know I was going to write about her. She never expected anything either. Her choice of The Starry Night has encouraged me to dig more into details about this young girl’s interest by texting her mom via social media. Surprisingly, Ameena responded with three little words when her mom asked her regarding her decision on The Starry Night.
“I simply did.”
Short and bold.

The Greatest Backbones
My husband (Mr. Abu Hassan Asyari)and I always encourage Ameena to follow her passion for arts. As her parents, we will always be there for her whenever she needs us (Mrs. Naziah Nawawie).
