Summary

Hogan Torah, an extra in The Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" music video, shares a behind-the-scenes account of a grueling, cold shoot that led to a lasting dislike for the song despite being a fan of the band.

Abstract

Hogan Torah, a participant in the music video for The Smashing Pumpkins' hit "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," has expressed a strong personal aversion to the song due to the harsh conditions endured during filming. Despite being paid minimally and subjected to freezing temperatures, Torah and other extras persevered, hoping for their big break. Torah's comment on YouTube received significant attention, prompting him to recount the experience of being hit in the face with a fire hose and the subsequent discomfort that has caused him to despise the song, despite acknowledging its musical quality. The experience was so negative that Torah initially swore off music video work, though he later accepted another offer for a Limp Bizkit video.

Opinions

  • Hogan Torah has a strong dislike for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" due to the unpleasant filming experience.
  • The extras, including Torah, were extremely cold during the shoot, with temperatures dropping to 40 degrees, and were only given their jackets between takes.
  • Torah was physically struck by a fire hose during filming, which contributed to his negative feelings towards the song.
  • Despite the harsh conditions, Torah was paid $180 for 12 hours of work, and the check was mailed to him, which he found unsatisfactory.
  • Torah distinguishes between his dislike for the song and his appreciation for the band's music, stating that musically, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" is a very good song.
  • He responds to a comment suggesting he isn't a true fan by clarifying that the music video was just a job to him.
  • The experience was so unpleasant that it broke the spirits of many extras, leading some to leave without pay.
  • Torah ultimately did another music video for Limp Bizkit, which paid more, indicating that despite his vow, the financial incentive was enough to sway his decision.

The Reason I’d Love to Kick Smashing Pumpkins in The Dick

I have a comment with 2.2k upvotes on YouTube for their song

The Smashing Pumpkins — Bullet with Butterfly Wings

Why being an extra in Smashing Pumpkin’s Bullet With Butterfly Wings made me hate them.

In Spite of The Low Pay. The Extra’s Decided to Stay.

I got drilled in the face with a fucking fire hose when it was 40 fucking degrees outside and fuck the Smashing Pumpkins.

Hi, I’m Hogan Torah and I’m not very fond of the Smashing Pumpkins. The fact that a comment on their music video for Bullet With Butterfly Wings got 2,200 likes has nothing to do with my disdain. Here’s the comment.

I was an extra for this video. It was freezing. Those bags they’re holding have their jackets in them for between shots. I’m the skinny dirty bald guy.

Of course, that prompted about a bazillion questions. Every once in a while, I answer them.

When this came out there was no pause. So I sat down to find myself. Two best places to see me are at 2:57 trying to get out of the way of the two dudes that are about to fall on me and the only face shot at 4:02 and it’s not that kind of face shot. (Me Getting DRILLED in nose with a fire hose.) I know it’s me from the weird belt. Remember, I was paid 180 bucks for 12 hours of this freezing hell. AND THEY MAILED THE CHECK! I still love the Pumpkins but HATE this song!

I hate this song because I was freezing my ass off before I got hit in the fucking face with a fucking fire hose and fuck the Smashing Pumpkins. Musically it a very good song but I will cringe every time I hear it for the rest of my life.

@Bananaman 219 Are you saying I’m not a true fan? Because if you are you are 100% correct. It was a job bruh.

“Sorry we waited till the coldest part of the night to hit you with a fucking fire hose, but if you leave now you won’t get paid. Now lets have you you and you getting hit directly in the face with it. Take 1. Action!” Half the people left anyway. By that point our souls were broken so it was just like, “Fuck it. We’re here. (action!)AAAAAAAAAAA!” And I wasn’t cheering for James Iha.

Yeah, it sucked. I vowed never to do a music video again. Then they called me for Limp Bizkit a month later that paid me twice what Pumpkin did so I took it.

I wrote a bunch more but those are the highlights.
