The Real Tales of an Intern Part 8
The outstanding doctor constantly emphasized the humanitarian aspect of medical care
“Linda, I hate my job.” “That makes two of us.” “Patients die by the second. I don’t think I can take it much longer.” “But you have just moved to a new posting. I thought you were looking forward to that.” “Honestly, I was till the death rate started getting to me. How can we be so inefficient?”
Sam was having her therapy session with Linda post-call. This was a space she felt safe in. She could say anything she wanted, and she knew her listeners would understand. Hell, they could blab to each other for hours. “Do you want to come spend time with me?” “I would love to, so I take my mind off things, but I have a date.”
During one of the loin groping sessions at the surgery clinic, Sam met a young man who accompanied his father to the clinic. He and Sam hit it off. He asked her out. “The guy is good-looking.” She muttered to Linda. “Besides, I need to vary my activity, so I keep my sanity.” “Good for you as long as you aren’t dating your patient.” “How is your mum, by the way?” “I am hiding from her.”
Sam got off the Zoom call after three hours. She had lost track of time and felt the least ashamed of that. Linda was her confidante. She needed to have these sessions if she was going to get through this internship. Sam quickly showered and got ready for her date. Her mum was entertaining guests, so it wouldn’t be difficult to slip away unnoticed. As she put the finishing touches on her makeup, she went downstairs and slipped out the back door. Her date was already outside the gates, in his car.
