The Real Reasons I Procrastinate

Internet, dogs, and coffee

I’ve been putting some thoughtful consideration into the reasons why I procrastinate. I’ve unearthed some emotional barriers, but also, some rather ordinary, everyday reasons that make my procrastination feel less like a problem to dissect, and more like a benign human thing.

If you are human, I imagine you can relate to these ten reasons I procrastinate:

  1. I have to poop
  2. I’m distracted by my hunger, but am too lazy to get my butt in the kitchen to cook
  3. I convince myself that I have better things to do, like pick at my thumb skin and grow ever more anxious about getting started on my work, obviously
  4. I haven’t showered in a few days and I can’t stand my greasy hair in my face
  5. I get caught in an endless scrolling loop on social media

6.I obsess over that text message I sent to a friend who hasn’t responded yet

7. I really, really, really need to know the 5 life hacks every smart person should know. I’m smart, after all.

8. There’s a crumb on the floor, so why not vacuum the whole house?

9. The dog hypnotizes me with his big eyes and I am lulled to go lay on the couch with him

Who could say no to that face, though?

10. I’ve had too much coffee in an attempt to stay alert, but instead it’s just shoving me into a tunnel of unfocused anxiety and vivid catastrophic thinking . . .

Usually, when I procrastinate, I only escalate my lack of desire to get started on my work. Getting started is the hardest part though. What are some of the procrastination traps in your life?
