The Reader Not Only Reads Your Stories But They Read You As Well

Remember, your voice and emotions are being projected through your writing.

Have you ever read a story on Medium and wondered if they’ve had any experience behind the story they just wrote? Or any knowledge behind it at least? Or how they were feeling when they hit the publish button? I have this habit of reading a story and analyzing the writer also. Occasionally, I’ll walk away with a comment such as, “Wow, this person must have gone through a lot to gain this level of understanding.” But when it comes to very few… not so much of that.

When it comes to your audience on Medium, they need to be able to take away something. This is also another reason why your title and subtitle are extra important. Many publications will stress that in their submission guidelines, usually in the formatting section. The title of your story will reel in the reader as they may need advice on a certain topic. It’ll also prepare them to get a pen and paper if they’re serious about it.

A reader knows when the story is not genuine. If they’re observant enough, they’ll know what your attitude was like when writing it. Medium is not necessarily a fan of ranting. I have to admit, I’ve deleted a few of my stories because it seemed like I was screaming at the reader. If you’re writing to vent, then perhaps you want to write that in a journal instead. However, there are exceptions to this. Let’s say you’re ranting but you’re also storytelling. Your reader can gain something from your rant and you feel relieved. You both win.

Also, be aware of your audience. Who are you talking to? What do you want them to know? How do you want to deliver the message? Before writing, ask yourself, “How are you feeling today?”. “Am I okay to write?”. Never write out of spite. Your words may come out like vomit, but the message will be missed. Your story is not only for you. It’s for your readers as well.

You’re doing amazing.
