The Rainy Night
Time is running out
“I am sorry, but you have only six months to live.” said the doctor. He looked at the doctor’s face with eyes wide open and slightly smiled. It was not a joyful smile but a smile that said, “Thank you for telling me the truth.”
He was not surprised by this, nor was he afraid of dying. Strangely enough, he was relieved in a way. It’s been over three years since the symptoms first started, and he knew something was wrong, but the doctors could not find out what it was. Now that he knew he would be on Earth for long, he decided to make the best out of it.
He decided to go home that night and sleep in his bed. The doctors wanted him to stay, but he decided he wanted to live the rest of his life away from hospitals. Since he would die, he felt it was essential to make the best out of the time he now had at hand.
When he got home, he had a slight fever and felt weak. He cooked some tofu and rice and then devoured it. After sleeping for two hours, he couldn’t sleep. His mind was racing with thoughts. No matter how calm and accepting he wanted to be, sometimes things were too heavy to bear. So, He decided to get out of bed and do some work but couldn’t do much.
He picked up his mobile phone and started to dial. The phone rang. “Hey Joe, it’s me; you remember last time we spoke, you mentioned you had this friend who went on a trip to Tibet and lived there for two years straight. If you’re in touch with him, can you put me in touch with him? I want to ask him a few things. Call me back when you get this.”
He hung up the phone and looked at the empty white wall. His parents always encouraged him to put some photos on his wall, but he enjoyed looking at the blank walls of his room. It said it helped him think better and also relax.
Things were falling apart in his life in recent days. Life hasn’t been kind to him for a while now.
Ever since April left him, things have been rough on him. Besides his parent, whom he only spoke to occasionally, April was the person who adored and loved him. He was planning to ask her to marry him, but little did they know things would change in weeks.
April said she could not do it anymore. She wanted to have a happy family, and although she loved him. She loved herself more; she wanted children, a loving home and a husband with a stable job.
He didn’t have any of that. He never wanted to have children either and never had a steady job. He wasn’t poor, but he didn’t exactly enjoy working 9–5, having kids and living a regular family guy life. It wasn’t exciting, but he was okay with the way things were, but things changed.
He again recalled the doctor’s words, “You have only six months to live.” He didn’t know what to do. It started to rain. He turned off the lights and lay on his bed, eyes open, staring at the ceiling.
