The Rainbow’s Promise

Working with young people for the last decade or more, I have had to become literate in all the issues they bring to me. I remember working with one young lady who came to sessions with a pin on her jacket that displayed a rainbow. Because I felt like I knew what the pin indicated I asked her about her dating life and if she was struggling with this. She had indicated that she was a Christian and I thought she may be experiencing challenges from her faith community or family due to her sexual identity.

She looked at me puzzled and said that she had a wonderful boyfriend and that her family was very supportive of the relationship. I then realized my mistake. I mistook her display of the rainbow pin to mean that she was gay or in some way involved in the Pride community. I have never made that mistake again.

Even though we as counselors are trained to remain neutral and unbiased as we work with individuals, we are still human and are influenced by the culture we exist in. As a Christian counselor, I have had to examine my personal beliefs about God and a biblical view on sexuality and gender, and the desire to help clients some of who may be nontraditional in the area of sexual or gender identity.

I have had to remember that I am not the moral judge or jury on the lives of my clients I am here to bring healing if I can. This viewpoint while allowing me to work with nontraditional clients has left me sometimes uncomfortable. I have had to seek peer support, and definitely pray and read my bible so that I could work through what I believe and feel to appropriately treat my clients.

Admittedly I do not get many nontraditional clients because they are aware from the beginning that I am a Christian Counselor, but I do get some. Because being part of the Pride community doesn’t mean that you don’t love God. There are many who love God, they just don’t believe He loves them back because of their lifestyle.

I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. 14 When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, 15 and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. Genesis 9:13–15

Every time I see the rainbow displayed I am reminded of my mistake long ago. I then remember that its origin is a loving promise from God “Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life”. I remember that it means that God loves all his creations regardless of their sexual identity or gender identity. He loves like a parent loves, and like all loving parents he wants his children to love Him back and to live in the way he has designed them to live.

As a parent myself, I know that my children don’t always follow my rules for their lives, yet I still love them. Won’t God do as much? As a parent even if my children are walking in disobedience I never want them to cut themselves off from me. I never want them to be in pain or to not come to me if they need help. Won’t God care as much?

So as the Rainbow continues to be displayed I want to thank God for his love and for His mercies, grace, and longsuffering attention to us. Those who call Him father are all His children even those who don’t always do what he wants us to do, yet he loves us and has given us a sign to remember His love.
