The Rain That Made Me Feel Alive

And gave me an experience of a lifetime.

Sea and a boy. Photo by the author

When was the last time you got drenched in the rain?

Just a month ago, I traveled to Cox’s Bazar, the longest sea beach in the world. I went there with one of my friends, but he left me alone the very next day due to some work unavoidable.

Unfortunately, Cox’s Bazar sea beach was a little crowded, and I wouldn’t say I liked that. So I stayed and wanted to experience a much nicer beach free from tourists. I may sound archaic — but the truth is I’m not too fond of this Instagram generation who are always busy taking selfies wherever they go. And the sea beach is always full of them.

So, the day my friend left for Dhaka, I went for the less-crowded sea beach of Teknaf, 80km away from Cox’s Bazar. At that time, I had no clue that — soon, my heart would get drenched in a nostalgic rain, and I would feel so alive.

After reaching Teknaf through the marine drive, I searched for a suitable hotel for my stay.

The marine drive was terrific. You will find the gorgeous Bay of Bengal on the right side and the left, a series of small hills covered with green trees. And in the valley — a light green paddy field. Amazing!!

The sun was up there, yet the weather was truly mind-blowing; not too hot, not too cold — and a gentle breeze all around.

I found a hotel, booked a room, and rested for a few hours. Then, in the afternoon, I went to explore the sea beach. It was free from tourists.

I saw only two groups of local boys playing football on the beach. So I sat there and watched them playing, keeping the sea as a backdrop. The waves were dancing towards the boys and then going back gently. The boys, being indifferent to anything, were playing their hearts out.

I always appreciate it when young people get involved in sports like this instead of spending hours with their stupid smartphones.

And these boys! — they were playing with full spirit — running, attacking opponents, scoring goals, coming back to defense, smiling, laughing, getting wet — they were full of life.

But suddenly, the weather betrayed them. So many clouds took over the sky.

My hotel was a few kilometers away from the sea beach. As it’s not a popular tourist destination yet — there are no hotels on the beach-side. Anyway, I collected a small polybag to protect my wallet and mobile phone from the rain. Then, I started walking through the shore.

You know, what happens when the rain comes on the beach! You can literally see them coming. You can feel the cold wind and hear the sound of raindrops — slowly — but — surely getting louder and coming towards you.

While I was walking and playing with the waves, the weather got too cloudy, and people started leaving the beach as quickly as possible. They didn’t want to have an excellent shower, I guess.

Anyway, the rain came with full force.

Within a few seconds, I was entirely drenched in the rain. And the sea? Oh! I can’t tell you how lovely it looks when raindrops fall on the waves.

I was standing straight in front of the sea, and the rain was giving its blessing on my head. I was devouring the beauty of a rainy sea beach and, at the same time, getting nostalgic.

I recalled all the rain that gave me beautiful memories.

While coming back home from school in my early years, I once encountered a stunning storm with heavy rain. My bicycle was going backward because of the strong wind. The entire world seemed to end soon as the darkness covered everything stealing the sunlight. Oh! It’s one of the best rain memories of my childhood.

Al through my life, I’ve always loved rain and storm. I don’t know why. But I do love it when nature gets wild, ignoring our proud existence.

While I was walking in the rain dissecting the waves, I rediscovered the truth that no matter how much technology takes control of my life with the promise of success and prosperity, it’s nature that can make me feel alive, connected, and truly happy.
