The Quick and Easy Way For Writers To Attribute Photos In Medium

Is Medium trying to gaslight its writers?

Photo by Noah Buscher on Unsplash

About a month ago, I noticed Medium change the way its writers attributed photos formatting their articles. In a flash, the process for attributing photos beneath Medium articles went from being easy into an exercise in futility.

Did you notice this change too?

I thought I was going crazy!

I must have spent what seemed like hours, loading and reloading images trying to activate that little credit line to appear underneath the photo.

My images would appear but the credit line would never automatically appear. I’d go back and click on the image again only to have my cursor flip to the top of my article. Then, I’d spend time testing the three different setting options. Nope, that didn’t change a thing. Maybe I didn’t upload my image correctly. Let’s try that again.

Sometimes the credit box would appear fleetingly. But would disappear before I could click on it.

One time, the little grey box appeared and stuck around. What did I do differently this time? I retraced my thoughts. Nothing made sense. I felt like I was gaslighting myself!

I must have wasted several hours going back and forth trying to figure this out. You only need to imagine the kind of prose I was emitting. Let’s just say pirates would be impressed.

Finally, I gave up in defeat. Before I let this challenge cause an anxiety attack, I went outside for a walk.

While outside, I experienced an ah-ha moment. I love it when I have these moments.

When I returned, I was determined to solve this issue once and for all. I’m not stupid but technology often makes me feel that way. Even me, the technophobe, can outsmart a coder!

As I often say, there’s always more than one way to skin a cat! Why I say that is a mystery I need to explore in another article.

Now it’s time for a drum roll. Here is the solution to your photo attribution problem in three easy steps:

STEP 1: Upload your photo into Medium.

STEP 2: Hover your mouse over the photo, right-click and choose the Copy image link

STEP 3: DAMMIT! The problem is RESOLVED!

The Moral of my story is that Medium coders are a smart bunch. Obviously, someone with more Medium clout and connections than I have informed those working behind the scenes. Thanks to Ilana Lydia; Lilly Hayha and many others I discovered in my pursuit of a solution to this challenge.
