The Quest For the Perfect Quokka Photo

The obligatory photographic activity when visiting Rottnest Island

Quokkas hold the reputation of being the happiest animal on earth. Pre-COVID, tourists flocked to West Australia’s Rottnest Island to take selfies with quokkas — and every June, the Australia West chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators invade the island for our annual writing retreat. In between the writing PD, there’s always a little time to hunt for the perfect quokka photo.

This little one gave me a hint of the famous quokka smile before bouncing away …

This inquisitive quokka held promise as he crept ever closer.

But instead of a happy smile, he decided to treat me with his best impersonation of Disney’s Tasmanian Devil.

So it was lucky I stumbled across one little obliging chap who was happy to pose.
