THE PSYCHE OF COLOR

A poem

Written in the 1980s, with the design of graphics, when searching for deeper meanings for everything

A hieroglyphic butterfly explains — with left and right brain antenna

color as a vehicle — for the reconciliation of opposites: science & art,

masculine & feminine, intellect & emotions, outer reality and inner soul.

RED is perceived -as the longest wavelength — in outer reality –

and recorded scientifically — on our masculine left brain.

Inside the psyche or soul — emotions are experienced -

which are those movements — waves or sensations; as reactions to stimuli –

such as color inside, then -when red is experienced — it is recorded -

on our feminine right brain — and is the shortest wavelength.

Inwardly — RED emanates from the navel; As passion, it licks upward –

in short grasping points; seemingly pulled by the heart.

As an anger, it pulls downward — in heavy, powerful loops.

Outwardly — “she” completely — absorbs you into herself –

leaving you drained — but still giving more.

Inwardly YELLOW emanates from — the reproductive organs -

and flows as a golden, liquid love — or life — through the bloodstream –

via lymphatic vessels. It's positive: sensation of love or life-energy — within;

it is negative: the electric — sensation of fear — a frozen death-like stillness –

forcing adrenal glands — to produce yellow so fast -to give life and energy

in points — like electricity.

Outwardly — androgynous — so giving of its light — that you can only receive;

you cannot be drawn into it.

Inwardly, BLUE has no genesis — but simply becomes — as the chest expands

and circulates like water vapor — upward, horizontally — throughout the brain;

clearing all things -to an empty — but peaceful — nirvana.

Outwardly — drawn towards “him”-but a cold, objective intellectualism –

keeps you from going in — and disperses — your awareness — away from it.

ORANGE — mellows the grabbing — energy — of red -

and helps it to give; and keeps its yellow — from giving everything.

It makes a balance — inwardly — of a glowing — fruitful fulfilment.

Its negative is ignorance — an ignoring of knowledge -

a lack of desire — for any more.

GREEN uses yellow — to give life and warmth — to a cool blue intelligence;

and keeps blue from dispersing — energy into space;

and rather greedily uses it — to grow and grow.

Inwardly — it is hungry — for life and growth. Its negative is envy –

jealousy for anything — one doesn’t have.

PURPLE — makes life from death. It keeps red from -

drawing you in too much. And keeps blue from -

letting you disperse too much. It is the doorway between –

inner and outer, and brings the ends of the rainbow — into a circle.

Inwardly — it is power from — the merging of the strongest feminine -

principle of passion — with the strongest masculine — principle of intellect.

The colour of — kings and death.
