The press was nasty to Meghan and Harry, but the Oprah interview was a very wrong move; Here is why…

No one wins when the family’s dirty laundry is aired in the public. No one! except Oprah…

A few years ago, the public fell in love with the story of the handsome British prince who married an outspoken biracial American divorcee. The internet, social media, press, and the entire world were unanimous on how beautiful this union was, and how it depicted a new era for the Royal Family.

So how did the adulation and adoration of the press for the Sussex's spiral into enmity, and when did the fairytale become a nightmare?

Well, for one as the new couple settled down and requested some level of privacy, the press curiosity, and intrusion into the private lives of these very public figures were heightened.

The demands made on Harry and Meghan were incessant, emboldened by years of royal traditions. It spanned from the most ridiculous to the obscene!

Also, the media storm created by Thomas and Samantha Markle and the constant rumors and falsehood perpetuated by clickbait thirsty press made life difficult for the newlyweds.

The more intrusive the press became, the more defensive and protective the Sussex's grew.

Now, one of the most effective PR tools used by the palace in managing falsehoods, mistruths, and rumors is to remain silent. Silence would mean that many of these rumors and falsehoods would never be addressed publicly but would die naturally.

The new duchess was exposed to a level of vilification and public scrutiny she had never experienced before, and her duke sought to protect her. The result is what we see today, an acrimonious relationship with the press and a divided royal family.

Yet, we know that members of the Royal Family face this kind of scrutiny ever so often. We understand that they are objectified and fictionized because their lives aren’t normal and sadly because their stories sell papers and get clicks.

In exchange for the immense unimaginable luxury and the highly privileged lifestyle, there is an unspoken expectation, that they are to “earn their stripes” by benignly accepting criticism from the public, being politically neutral, and offering public service. It seems all quite simple.

Very recently, the comments section of Clarence House, the official social media handle of Prince Charles and Camilla had to be muted as a result of the onslaught of trolls which was a fall out of newly released episodes of Netflix drama “ The Crown” that depicted the couple poorly.

Similarly, royal wives have always been subjected to abuse, disparagement, and unfair scrutiny by the press. Kate was infamously referred to as “waitykaity”, her family was called opportunistic, and the phrase “door to manual”, a condescending allusion to the air hostess role Carole Middleton held in the past was often used in the press.

Meghan’s case was not different, except that in addition to being a royal wife, she was a divorced biracial American divorcee.

The Sussex's’ felt the palace should have done more to protect them, they are aggrieved and are now telling the world their story.

The question is, to what purpose and at what cost? What exactly does this public denouncement of the Royal Family aim to achieve?

The Sussex's’ decision to step back from royal duties was understandable, the timing and the manner, not so much. The move to LA can be explained, what is inexplicable is subjecting one’s family to the cruelest and most unjust court on earth; the court of public opinion. This is exactly what the interview achieved.

The interview raised more questions than answers, more debates than resolutions. Those supporting the Royals have trolled Harry and Meghan even more, while fans of Harry and Meghan have described the Royal family in very unflattering terms. It is a no-win situation.

The Royal family may be a prominent public family, but at the heart of it, it is just a family, every family has its quirks, and there are no perfect families. Families that thrive have mastered the art of settling their differences privately!

To be clear, knowing how morbidly private the royal family is, speaking publicly about private royal matters is deemed as the ultimate act of betrayal in royal circles and as Meghan herself knows, the betrayal of a father or sister stings differently than the betrayal of a stranger or third parties.

Meghan herself alluded to this fact when she stated during the interview that “she lost her father”, has Prince Charles also lost a son and a daughter -In-law? Has he also lost his grandchildren?

Will Archie and his unborn sister have an opportunity to relate with his other cousins? Will the camaraderie that should exist between families survive this interview?

While nothing should diminish conversations on mental health and racism, when conversations on issues like this are held in the context of a very public family feud it introduces elements of bias and spurs mistrusts in the public.

People begin to question whether the accounts of the accuser is accurate or whether it has been modified to engender public sympathy or gain clout!

Yet, the conversation on racism and mental health should not be undermined. History has shown over and over again that wealth and privilege provide no immunity to depression, it is for this reason that billionaires and seemingly successful people commit suicide. When people cry out for help, we should never respond by referring to their privilege, rather we should respond with empathy, love, and support.

Clearly, the royal family needs to do more to protect royal spouses from negative press and the pressures of a very public life. Yet, watching a grown, educated, accomplished woman moan on tv that nobody taught her royal etiquette or how to sing the National Anthem of her adopted country was cringey. Surely, an actress who memorizes lines for a living can learn to sing a line or two.

Also, it was unfair of Prince Harry to say that his father and brother were trapped. It was particularly disrespectful to the legacy of the 94-Year-old monarch who has offered decades of sterling public service.

We will never know if Harry and Meghan made the right choice by stepping away from the royal life, only time will tell. What we do know however is that sometimes, the fastest and surest way of effecting change is from within.

As the world watches the next move in this real life drama, let’s hope that all the parties find the peace and healing they need to move on, while the rest of us focus on more important issues like surviving the pandemic and paying the bills.
