The Power of Your Words

The creative force of the world

Can you imagine a world without the spoken or written word? Without words, higher-level communication would not exist, and neither would civilization. Why is this so? Because words create.

Words created the world, life, and society. It is because of the Word that you and I exist! As scripture says:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 NIV

The Creative Force in the World

Think about it. The Word created all of life, making it the creative force in the world. Since God created us in His image, we follow his example and create with our words.

You create many things by the words you speak and write. At the very least, you create impressions on those you communicate with, whether through the written or spoken word.

The effect of your words ripples beyond everyone they touch. This rippling effect is like chaos theories’ butterfly effect. The only difference is it affects people’s minds and hearts, not quantum mechanics or the weather.

If no one hears or reads your words, do they exist? Could the outcome be similar to the proverbial saying, “If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Science tells us it does make a sound, regardless of anyone hearing it. It is comforting to think words are similar, so long as they do not contain evil. They affect you since you spoke or wrote them, and they will affect someone else once read or heard. They put forth energy, regardless of anyone hearing or reading them.

“By words we learn thoughts, and by thoughts we learn life.” — Jean Baptiste Girard (1775–1815)

The power of words

Words are so powerful they not only create; they can also destroy. Words can build up or tear down a person. Mere words have started wars that have killed countless millions.

Words are expressive, affecting your emotions and the emotions of others. The emotions created by words likewise create and destroy through love and hate.

Words produce good or evil; truth or deceit. With so much deceit in the world today, it takes a keen ear to discern the truth. Truth builds, deceit tears down. Even half-truths and gossip are a form of deceit that destroys. Avoid them at all costs.

“Kind words are a creative force, a power that concurs in the building up of all that is good, and energy that showers blessings upon the world.” Lawrence G. Lovasik (1913–1986)

Imagine what it would be like if you could not speak or write words. You could not communicate with others, and the world would only exist within your mind. Your life would be that of a lower lifeform. Could you still communicate at a very rudimentary level, or at all?

Words make the impossible possible

Think about Helen Keller. She became blind, deaf, and mute from an illness at only 19 months, yet words set her free. Were she never able to express herself in words, humanity would have lost a truly remarkable individual.

Because of Anne Sullivan, Keller accomplished the seemingly impossible. She learned to speak and write through her sense of touch! Check out some of the old videos showing her speaking on YouTube. What she accomplished in her life was astonishing.

To this day, Keller’s words touch the hearts and minds of millions of people worldwide. What could be more creative than that!

Fortunately, most of us communicate with words in spoken and written form every day. How thankful are you for this ability?

Words define us

Think of the power words have in and on our lives. When we use words, those that read or hear them can see, in part, who we are and what we think. Every word you speak or write creates an impact on the world.

“Our words have power. They impact others, but they also impact us.” Michael Hyatt (1955-present)

When you say something to someone, they process the words in their mind. When you write words and others read them, they make meaning of what you have written. When you think about it, words are a miracle. Communication in all its forms is miraculous!

Isn’t it fascinating to read what another person writes? They create a string of words to express their thoughts, as you and I do each time we write. The same is true when we speak.

Words are the only way to peek inside the mind of another person. You discover, in part, who a person is when you read or hear their thoughts through their words. The same is true for the words you write or speak. Their writing or speech stimulates your thoughts, as does your writing and speech stimulate theirs. It is through this interaction of thoughts through words that intelligence exists.

“But words are things, and a small drop of ink,

Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces

That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.” George Gordon (1788–1824)

All words eventually affect our relationships, which are the essence of life. While some communication happens at a biological level, intelligent communication requires words. The higher the communication level, the more understanding, and intelligence required. As intelligence increases, the ability to create through words potentially increases.

“Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know more.” Confucius (551–479 BC)

Why are some people considered more creative than others? It is not raw intelligence that makes someone more creative. There are plenty of educated fools in the world. Could it be they are more curious? Perhaps it is because they care more, make better connections, and better understand what they read or hear.

Final thoughts

Words define our very existence and can create anything. They do the impossible. How else would we be able to put a man on the moon?

We are blessed to so freely use the written and spoken word today. There are no limits to the number of people you can touch anywhere on the planet because of the internet, which itself would not exist without words!

To affect one life by what you write or can make life worth living. May you affect countless lives by the words you choose!

Always remember there is serious power in your words.

“The pen is mightier than the sword” Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803–1873)

In whatever you write or speak, may your words be powerful, creating good in the world for humanity. Now go. Conquer the world with your words!
