The Power of Thanks Giving
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days. For one thing, it hasn’t been reduced to consumerism like Christmas. Sure, during Thanksgiving dinner we consume a lot too, but it mostly fills our bellies instead of our Christmas trees. During Thanksgiving, we gather around to give thanks for the simplest of gifts: our life, family, and circumstances.
Giving thanks is not only about traditions; it has the power to improve our well-being. Whether you are spiritual or religious, neither or both. Science has proven that giving thanks can improve our well-being.
In a study, participants were assigned to either a group that journaled about being grateful or to a group that wrote about their daily frustrations. The gratitude-giving group showed heightened well-being.
Even if you aren’t from the USA, giving thanks is a beautiful practice. Remember to practice gratefulness. Being thankful might not solve your problems nor make you immediately happy. But it will give you reasons to look beyond your problems and reasons to be happy.
Expressing gratitude can be done in many ways. You can do this through meditating, praying, or journaling — or even through Medium!
So, today — and always — I am grateful that you are reading this. I also am grateful to have a place of my own. My family is far away, but I am grateful that I get to talk to them.
Take care and remember to be grateful!
