The Power of Starting with the End in Mind: Crafting a Memorable Legacy

Have you ever wondered what your legacy will be? How will the people you leave behind after you pass remember you?
It’s easy to get lost in the chaos of today’s world. Too many distractions, deadlines, etc. I find it rather overwhelming. As I am getting older, I am starting to reflect on how will my sons remember me.
I go back to “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. In his book, Covey introduced the second habit: starting with the end in mind. This simple yet powerful principle encourages you to shape your life. It gives you deliberate purpose. You visualize the legacy you want to leave behind.
When you start with the end in mind, you craft your future. Don’t mistake it with predicting your future, though. You set a path that guides your actions, decisions, and daily pursuits.
Do following to start with your end in mind:
- Picture yourself in a casket at your funeral (morbid, I know): (1) What’s your eulogy?; (2) What are your sons, daughters, wives, and husbands saying?; (3) How do they feel for losing you to the afterlife?
- Based on your answers, plan your journey to get there: (1) What character do you need to develop to become the type of person that matches your answers; (2) who’s your role model to becoming this person?; (3) What actions do you have to take today to become that person?
- Get to work!
Embark on your journey. Craft your legacy.
