The Power of Reading: How Reading 52 Books in 2022 Improved my Life

And How it’s Achievable in 2023 for YOU too

Photo by Matias North on Unsplash

In the fast-paced world we live in, it can be easy to overlook the importance of reading. We often prioritize other activities, such as work, socializing, or scrolling through social media, over picking up a book.

However, the benefits of reading are vast and varied, and can have a significant impact on our personal and professional lives. In 2022, I decided to challenge myself to read 52 books in a year (1 book a week), and the experience has been truly transformative.

I will share with you the various ways in which reading has improved my life, the challenges I faced while attempting to read 52 books in a year, and the impact that this reading challenge has had on me.

Whether you’re an avid reader or just starting out, I hope to inspire you to see the power of reading for yourself.

The Benefits of Reading

The benefits of reading are numerous and varied. Here are just a few of the ways in which reading has improved my life:

  1. Increased knowledge: One of the most obvious benefits of reading is that it expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us. Through reading, we have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics and perspectives, from history and science to fiction and current events. This increased knowledge can not only make us more informed and well-rounded individuals, but it can also make us more confident and effective in our personal and professional lives.
  2. Improved critical thinking and communication skills: Reading also helps to improve our critical thinking and communication skills. As we read, we are constantly analyzing and interpreting the information we are presented with, which helps to sharpen our ability to think critically. Additionally, reading exposes us to a wide range of writing styles and formats, which can help to improve our own writing and communication skills.
  3. Increased empathy and understanding of others: Reading can also help to increase our empathy and understanding of others. When we read about the experiences and perspectives of characters in a book, we are able to better understand and relate to people who may be different from us. This can help to broaden our perspective and make us more open-minded and compassionate individuals.
  4. Stress reduction: Finally, reading can be a great way to reduce stress and relax. It allows us to escape from the demands of everyday life and lose ourselves in a different world for a while. This can be especially helpful for those who have busy or high-stress lives, as it provides an opportunity to unwind and recharge.

The Challenges of Reading 52 Books in a Year

While reading 52 books in a year may sound like a daunting task, I was able to accomplish it through the use of various strategies and techniques. One of the main challenges I faced while attempting to read 52 books in a year was finding the time to do so. I had to be strategic about how I allocated my reading time.

Some of the strategies I used to make time for reading included:

  • Scheduling dedicated reading time: I made sure to set aside specific times each day or week for reading. This could be before bed, during my lunch break, or on the weekends.
  • Listening to audiobooks: I also utilized audiobooks, which allowed me to “read” while doing other activities such as commuting or working out.
  • Choosing shorter books: I made an effort to choose shorter books that I could get through more quickly, which helped me to make progress towards my goal of 52 books in a year.

By using these and other strategies (such as speed reading but I won’t talk about it here as it’s not for everyone and I’ve already written an article about it here), I was able to make progress towards my goal of reading 52 books in a year. It took some planning and dedication, but I was able to fit reading into my busy schedule and make it a consistent part of my routine.

The Impact of Reading 52 Books in a Year

We can learn so many things by reading 52 books. But one thing I learned by reading that much is that it’s important to engage with the material you’re reading, else you’ll forget it in a few days.

That’s why I took notes and made flashcards with Anki. Anki is a popular flashcard program that allows users to create and review digital flashcards on a variety of topics. By taking notes and creating Anki flashcards as I read, I was able to retain a lot of valuable knowledge from the books I read and use it to improve my personal and professional life.

Here are a few ways in which taking notes and making Anki flashcards helped me to get the most out of my reading experience:

  • Improved comprehension: Taking notes and making flashcards helped me to better understand and process the information I was reading. It forced me to think more critically about the material and condense it into more digestible chunks.
  • Enhanced retention: By reviewing my notes and flashcards regularly, I was able to retain a lot of the information from the books I read. This has been especially helpful for subjects that I may not encounter in my everyday life, but that I still want to remember.
  • Personal and professional development: The knowledge and insights I gained from reading 52 books in a year have been invaluable for my personal and professional development. By taking notes and making Anki flashcards, I was able to more easily apply what I learned to my own life and professional projects.

Final Note

Reading 52 books in a year has been a transformative experience for me. It was hard, but it was worth it.

That’s why in 2023, I am excited to continue my journey as a reader. Instead of reading one book per week, I am planning to challenge myself to read one book every five days. I am confident that this new goal will bring its own set of challenges and rewards, and I am eager to see what the future holds.
