The Power of Piggy Banks
Really, there is a power in them
When I was a little girl, there was always a piggy bank in my house.
I especially remember two.
A clay pitcher.
And a tin piggy bank. The kind with a painted green bill. 100€. It was the only bill you could find there.
At that time, my parents smoked. And every time they tried to quit smoking, they would put the money they spent on cigarettes in there. And they saved.
It’s not really clear for what.
Because those two piggy banks were always full of duct tape.
And just as the money went in. It went out.
But they were excited about saving in the piggy banks.
Let’s say, a fool’s errand.
So you can well imagine, those piggy banks never got filled.
Also, I don’t really understand… they bought them huge…
I’m not sure for what.
And they made rules… only 2 euro coins… they said.
As if the ones of 1 euro or less weren’t money.
But piggy banks, if you use them well, have their function. And they work.
They worked for me.
A lot.
I like piggy banks. Clay ones. The ones they sell in the village.
They don’t have to be very big.
Every year, even as an adult, I would get a new piggy bank.
Sometimes earth-colored. Other times more whitish. Other times black.
But always a piggy bank.
As an adult, I remember three trips in which I paid for my stay only with the money saved in the piggy bank.
I’m not lying to you.
I traveled to Myanmar with the money saved over a whole year.
I spent a week in New York with the saved money.
And a summer on the Spanish coast, with the saved money.
In my piggy banks… anything that is money is allowed. Everything counts.
The best thing about the clay piggy bank… is the moment of the hammer blow…
That first hit…
And seeing how the coins… and the occasional bill… fall to the sides… And scatter.
This first hit is a very delicate moment. Because if you hit it too hard, you run the risk of shattering the piggy bank.
Well,
In any case, after the first hit, very carefully so as not to hurt yourself, you put the piggy bank upside down.
And you start counting…
Really… That moment is priceless…
We start a new year.
New dreams.
New trips.
If I had to ask for a gift this Christmas…
I would ask for a piggy bank.
Without hesitation.
It’s like being given the next trip.
Anyway, we sell safaris.
With love,
Mavi
P.S. Avoid at all costs the piggy banks that can be opened from below. It’s the same as having a piggy bank full of duct tape. They’re worthless.
