The Power of Jesus Calling Us

The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 1

Photo by Joao Cruz on Unsplash

Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him. A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men. — Mark 1:17–20

I was sitting at a table in the student union building when Jesus first called me. The same was true for my best friend. For others they were sitting in coffee shops, church, on the street, or in their cubicle at work.

Jesus calls us right where we are at in life.

I remember when he called me, I was not perfect by any means. In fact, I was in the middle of my most broken season of life. It was a time where I put all my worth in social status, girls, and my degree. And it wasn’t working out very well.

So often, we think that Jesus won’t call us into something more until we have cleaned ourselves up. We think we are disqualified by our circumstances and issues when it comes to God’s Kingdom.

Yet, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

When Jesus calls us, he isn’t looking at who we are or how perfect we are in life. He is looking at who God made us not be in life. He isn’t looking to see if we are rich, wise, or of a particular status. Jesus calls us to step into the life God wants for us.

Jesus Doesn’t Call People Because It Makes Sense

When I look back at my life, those he called into ministry beside me, and even the disciples I realized that he doesn’t call people because it makes sense. He does it because it stands out and he wants us in his Kingdom.

When someone because a follower of Jesus, they are exactly the type of people he wants because it stands out. It doesn’t mean that people with money, status, or power won’t be called by Jesus, because he calls them too.

However, he might call them into something that doesn’t have anything to do with what they have in order to make them stand out too.

Jesus the Messiah calls people to believe in him so that they may enter the Kingdom of God and so they can have a greater impact on those who they will share that kingdom with as well.
